Learning objectives
The course aims at providing the fundamental knowledge of pathologies in the field of internal medicine: the origin, the main clinical signs, the major treatments, the epidemiology and the problems connected to the management of acute and chronic pathology, especially with the elderly; specific attention is addressed to the field of oncology, geriatrics and neurology;
Expected learning outcomes
The student will be able to:
· discuss the fundamentals, the main signs and the main treatment methods of pathologies in the field of internal medicine (and in particular in oncology, geriatrics and neurology);
· discuss the most relevant epidemiological data of the current Italian population;
· discuss issues related to hospitalization / institutionalization with particular reference to the elderly person;
· discuss palliative care and cancer-related supportive therapies;
· discuss the structures of the central nervous system that control and integrate movement and sensory;
· discuss the basic aspects of neuropsychology;
· discuss the elements of first aid.

Neurology
Course syllabus
Aims: to teach the anatomical-functional bases and semeiotics of the central and peripheral nervous system, as well as the physiopathological aspects of cognitive functions and the clinical syndromes connected to them. Finally the course deals with the main neurological pathologies.
Programme:
Cognitive Functions: Language and aphasia: brain areas responsible for language; language examination; clinical classification of aphasia. Apraxia: ideomotor, ideational, bucco-facial apraxia; brain areas responsible for praxic functions; examination of praxia. Memory and amnesic syndromes: short-term memory and long-term memory; retrograde memory and antegrade memory; memory exam; brain areas responsible for memory functions; amnesic syndromes disorders of thought and behavior control: the prefrontal cortex; functions performed by the prefrontal cortex: attention, cognitive flexibility, abstraction, judgment, programming, forecasting; cognitive alterations from prefrontal dysfunction and environmental addiction syndrome;
Anatomo-physio-pathological correlations: Voluntary movement: anatomo-physiological references: the pyramidal system; semeiotics: central and peripheral paralysis, reflex movement: anatomical-physiological references: osteotendinous reflexes and muscle tone; semeiotics: hyperreflexia and spasticity, hyporeflexia and flaccidity. Coordination and balance: anatomical-physiological references: the cerebellum. Cerebellar disorders. Fluidity and motor control: anatomical-physiological references: nuclei of the base and extrapyramidal system. Parkinsonisms. Involuntary movements and dystonias. Somatic sensitivity: anatomical-physiological references: the ways of superficial sensitivity and deep sensitivity. The distribution of sensory disturbance. The dissociation of sensitivities;
Main Neurological pathologies: Degenerative diseases: Alzheimer's disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Disimmune diseases: Multiple Sclerosis, Guillain Barrè's disease, Myasthenia Gravis. Vascularization of the central nervous system: anatomical references. Cerebrovascular diseases: ischemic and hemorrhagic brain stroke, neurovascular syndromes)

Course syllabus
Vital signs (temperature°, cardiac and respiratory frequency, blood pressure): basic knowledge and techniques in monitoring these items.
Bladder catheter: basic knowledge and management.
Decubits classification and prevention techniques.
First responder: hypotension and hypertension, hypothermia and hyperthermia, foreign body inhalation. and emergency intervention (practical exercise).
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (practical exercise).
