Learning objectives
The course aims to introduce some fundamental narrative works of French literature. We aim to analyze the main themes, the characters, the structures, the styles of the various texts in the program. We will try to stimulate students to reflect and to a personal critical reading of the proposed works.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge: 1) An essential framework of French Literature, according to the periods and authors considered, 2) Understanding basic elements in order to analyse texts' structure (metrical, stylistic, narrative devices), 3) Good knowledge of spoken and written French language. Skills. 1) Ability to identify the main expressive features (stylistic, thematic and structural) of every literary work and recognize the author's identity in it 2) Ability to date literary works in chronological and cultural connection with Italian literature, 3) Ability to use coherently critical contributions 4) Ability to read works and identify themes and formal issues.

The course is entitled: 'Délaisser le fuseau pour la plume : les femmes et l'écriture littéraire de la Renaissance au XXe siècle'.
It is divided into 3 parts:
Part One (Prof. A. Preda)- During the Renaissance, women conquered an unprecedented literary space, no longer, or rather not only the ideal or damned object of male artistic expression, but the subject of writing, the protagonist of the culture of her time, an active part in the editorial atelier taking shape in the century of printing. In the first part of the course, the aim is to analyse this statement through the lyrical and prose production of some female figures of 16th century France.
Part Two (Prof. F. Paraboschi) - In the second part, we will study two novels published in the late 19th and early 20th century that are very different from each other. The two authors - Rachilde and Marcelle Tinayre - embody in opposite ways the literary aspirations and ideological positions of intellectual women, who at that time managed to gain greater visibility, albeit with difficulty, than at the turn of the century.
Part Three (Prof. E. Sparvoli) - In the third part, we will analyse Marguerite Yourcenar's collection "Nouvelles orientales", where the female figures draw their powerful originality from the cultural syncretism that nourishes them and of which the author's own training, matured outside the canonical circuits of the French intellectuals of her time, is the most evident expression.

Prerequisites for admission
The course which is held entirely in French, the materials and the exam bibliography assume solid linguistic skills. Erasmus or other forms of mobility students are admitted, provided they have excellent skills in French.
Teaching methods
The course adopts the following teaching methods: lectures with class interaction and active participation by students in international events organised within the University of Milan on topics related to those developed during the course.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The examination consists of an interview, in French, on the different parts of the syllabus, based on the literary works under analysis. The test is designed to ascertain the student's ability to comment on a literary text, to relate it to other texts by noting common features and differences, and to elaborate, from the critical essays included in the programme, a personal reflection.
The final grade is expressed in thirtieths, and the student has the option of refusing it (in which case it will be recorded as "withdrawn").
