The European Union and Third Countries: Relations with Switzerland

Learning objectives
Knowledge and understanding of the subjects covered by the programme: the student must demonstrate adequate knowledge and understanding of EU external relations and Swiss-EU relations. Ability to rework legal principles and norms: The student must demonstrate that he/she is able to apply the notions of law learned to concrete cases, through the study of official EU documents and, in particular, of the Court of Justice of the European Union and national, Italian and Swiss courts. Autonomy of judgement: the student must demonstrate the ability to take reasoned and legally tenable positions with reference to the topics covered by the course. Mastery of legal terminology: the student must demonstrate that he/she is able to express the acquired knowledge of the law with coherent argumentation and propriety of language. Learning ability: the student must demonstrate that he/she has acquired the basic tools for updating his/her knowledge of the EU's external relations and, in particular, Switzerland-EU, by applying the relevant legal and case-law framework.
Expected learning outcomes
A student who has successfully mastered the subject matter will, at the end of the course, have an in-depth knowledge of the topics covered and have acquired a method of reasoning suitable for dealing with the more specific and complex legal issues with respect to the basics of European Union law.

1) The relations between the EU and third countries. 2) EU-Switzerland relations. 3) The agreement on the free movement of persons between the EU and Switzerland. 4) The agreement on Switzerland's association with the Schengen and Dublin systems.
