Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to provide:
1. the theoretical-practical knowledge of the most common laboratory diagnostic techniques applied in bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology in order to be able to carry out a correct diagnostic process in various pathological materials.
2. An overview of the organization and safety criteria of the clinical microbiology laboratory

Expected learning outcomes
Student will be able to apply the most relevant analytical procedures in clinical microbiology. He will also learn the most important diagnostic algorithm in the field of clinical microbiology.
At the end of the course the student will be able to perform the most basic microbiological tests for a correct diagnosis. She/he will apply techniques including the basic gram-stain till the most relevant and difficult diagnostic assays.

Prerequisites for admission
The student must have knowledge in the field of microbiology and how to categorize and classify microorganisms on the basis of their related diseases. He/she will therefore need to know the main viruses, bacteria and fungi of medical interest, as well as the technical bases for their phenotypic and genotypic identifications.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will in a written form by including all the topics listed in the program. In particular, each student will receive a written test with open questions and multiple choice cross questions If required, in particular case, there is the possibility to do oral examination.
The evaluation is a grade expressed out of thirty.

PREVENTION OF BIOLOGICAL RISK:
· Review of the use of individual protection devices, air flow cabinets management and immunological surveillance.
PRINCIPLES OF VIROLOGICAL DIAGNOSYS:
· CULTURAL EXAMINATION;
· tissue and cell cultures;
· Direct and indirect immunofluorescence tests for identification of specific virus antigens
