Learning objectives
The course aims to explain the basic concepts and principles for a full understanding of the national and european legal system and of the deontological rules in the fields of interest for biology graduates. Furthermore the course aims to introduce the students to the principal questions of bioethics, especially
for relationship between scientific research and human life and for current issues about animal and environmental ethics.The fundamental aim of the course is to give the students the necessary tools to understand the legal system and to develop a personal critic idea on controversial issues of public bioethics.

Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will acquire:
knowledge of the basic concepts of the legal italian system (Constitution, national parliamentary and governmental laws, european laws);
legal frame of the activity of biologist and deontological rules;
knowledge of the principal issues ot bioethics.

Course syllabus
The bioethics module aims to provide an overview of the principles and the most important normative documents in the field of research ethics, as well as to explore the main ethical, legal and social issues raised by the most recent developments in biotechnology research and biomedical research, especially data-intensive research. The topics covered in the course include: ethical principles of biomedical research, the inclusion of vulnerable individuals in research, informed consent, animal experimentation, research biobanks, organoids, stem cell research, genome editing.

Course syllabus
Legal rules, religious rules, ethical rules. The deontology. Connections between legal and deontological rules. The Codes of Ethics. Introduction to legal rules. The separation of powers. The principal levels of production of legal rules. The efficacy of legal rules in time. The most important types of sources of legal rules: Constitution, constitutional laws, ordinary laws, decree-laws, legislative decrees, regional laws, regulations for enforcement of laws, European regulations and directives. The antinomies between sources of law and their solution. The legal rules for the profession of biologist.
Teaching methods
Interactive frontal lessons integrated by powerpoint presentations. Students are stimulated to actively participate to the lessons in order to improve their critical ability.
