Learning objectives
The workshop examines how Latin American history is represented in international cinema, looking at events spanning the period from the 19th century process of nation-building to the national, regional and international dynamics of the modern day.
Expected learning outcomes
Participants will be guided through a selection of particularly thought-provoking films and documentaries which highlight relationships between history and cultural memory. Participants will learn how to watch audiovisual productions with a critical eye, thanks to their deconstruction of narratives and historical imaginations.

Course syllabus
The Workshop responds to the student component's interest in the horizons of Latin America, between long-term historical roots and current dynamics. The international films/documentaries on the topic will be presented in their dimension as archives of fragments of historical knowledge, narratives, and representations (of the past and present). Guided vision and class discussion aim to foster tuning into the relationship with historiography and cultural memory of the audiovisual works in question, from a perspective of careful deconstruction.
Prerequisites for admission
The student component should be able to watch the proposed selection of movies/documentary films with an insightful look at the objectives of the Workshop, demonstrating a ready capacity for classroom discussion on the themes and the representations relevant to the works under consideration.
Teaching methods
The meetings aim at fostering the active participation by the student component on both the level of fruition of the movies/documentary films and classroom discussion.
Teaching Resources
The selection of movies/documentary films will be illustrated in the opening meeting of the Workshop.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The student component will be expected to prepare individual or group presentations on the themes and representations relevant to the movies/documentary films proposed in the Workshop. The topic of the presentations should be discussed in advance with the lecturer.
