Teaching Workshop: Philosophy Workshop 2
A.Y. 2023/2024
Learning objectives
Expected learning outcomes
The workshop aims to develop the following skills:
Critical thinking skills:
By the end of the workshop, students will display a sufficiently independent critical approach in selecting and interpreting the notions that are most relevant their area of study and to the broader socio-cultural context in which they operate
Communication skills:
By the end of the workshop:
- students will be able to effectively communicate the acquired knowledge and disseminate it to the general public;
- student will have developed basic IT skills concerning knowledge preservation and transfer.
Learning skills:
By the end of the workshop, students will have developed the learning skills required to continue their studies in keeping with their own research interests. In order to meet this objective, students will also develop relevant skills in the independent interpretation of sources and in the use of basic IT tool for bibliographic research.

The workshop "Philosophy of Communication: Signs, Actions, Contexts" offers several philosophical paths aimed at understanding the dynamics behind communication and how signs (verbal and nonverbal) function in this context. What is a communicative process? What are the indispensable elements, linguistic and nonlinguistic? What are the challenges of communication in the age of social media and AI? Beginning with these questions, students are introduced to the key concepts and main approaches of communication theories (semiotic, hermeneutic, pragmatic, social-psychological). Next, they analyze and discuss a selection of philosophical essays drawn from some exponents of classical pragmatism and from the contemporary debate (drawn from C.S. Peirce, G.H. Mead, M. McLuhan, J.L. Austin, and others).
On the basis of the knowledge achieved in the first part of the workshop, students are divided into small working groups, which investigate specific topics (e.g., what is a "sign," the role of the other and the environment in the process of communication, in what sense communication is an action, the problems of communication in the infosphere) using the theoretical and methodological tools provided by the professor. The results of such research finally converge in the development of interactive multimedia presentations, which include the theoretical synthesis of the paths and a report of analyzed cases (videos, advertisements, literary texts, etc.).

Teaching methods
The workshop combines different teaching methodologies so as to hone specific skills and competencies, in addition to the transmission of the content covered in the workshop. In the first part of the workshop, the basic concepts of the philosophy of communication, with special reference to signs and their signification, are introduced by the professor. In the second part, the methodology of "problem-based learning" is also adopted so as to consolidate the content learned, "cooperative learning" (by means of group work with objectives given by the teacher) and "project work," which will also enable the implementation of communication skills.
Teaching Resources
Selection of text provided by the professor.
