Learning objectives
The course aims to guide students to the systematic and critical knowledge of Ancient Greek literature in its historical development (from the Archaic Era to Late Antiquity), based on the direct approach to texts in their original form.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledges
The course aims to lead the students to the knowledge of the major traits and issues of archaic, classical and Roman-Imperial Greek Literature. It will also be essential to contextualise authors and texts in their historical period, to learn some basic notions of metrics and rhetoric and to identify the various literary genres of lyric poetry and Greek prose.
Skills
Students will be asked to accurately read the texts and to gain an adequate skill in analysing their content and style, along with their meaning within their literary genre and historical context. Students will be guided in understanding and using the related scholarly literature and the basic bibliographic resources in order to allow them to autonomously widen their research on the matter. As a result, students will improve their communication skills and will be able to identify their own research interests and evaluate their own intellectual maturation.

The course will be integrated by:
- translation training courses, which will be held in the second semester;
- annual courses for beginners in Ancient Greek, which will start in the first semester.
Information on supplementary activities will be made available on the Ariel website of the course and on the sites of the various degree courses.
International or incoming Erasmus students are invited to promptly contact the teacher in charge of the course.

Prerequisites for admission
The Greek Literature course and the translation training-classes can be usefully attended only by students who already possess a knowledge of the ancient Greek language equal to the one acquired in classical high school.
For those who do not have such a knowledge, there are specific one-year-long courses about Greek language, starting at the beginning of the first semester. Students without a previous knowledge of Ancient Greek must attend these courses before starting the main course; if necessary, they can also plan the exam in the following academic year.
Students who already know Greek and still want to review systematically the linguistic foundations can usefully attend the beginner course.
Metric reading of poetic texts is required.
For those who do not have such a knowledge, there are specific one-year-long courses about Greek language, starting at the beginning of the first semester. Teaching methods
The course will be mostly given through lectures; in Part III and Part IV students will be invited to participate actively. Extensive use will be made of the teaching site on the Ariel platform and, in general, of specialized IT tools.

During the lessons, therefore, synthetic bibliographical information offered here will be supplemented and extended, also reporting any additional readings for the exam.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Oral exam, after passing a written translation test, which is mandatory for students of the classical curriculum. The translation test can be replaced with the final test of the translation training courses. Failure to pass this test does not forbid to access the oral exam, but nevertheless contributes to final grade of the oral test.
The oral exam will require the analytical knowledge of the history of Greek literature in its development, from Homer to the late antique period; therefore, starting from the texts in the original language examined during the course, the translation, methodological and historical-critical competence reached by each student will be assessed.
The evaluation is out of thirty for the oral test; the written test will have a positive or negative judgment.
The examination methods for students with disabilities and / or specific learning disorders will be concordated, in agreement with the competent office.
