Learning objectives
The course is the first step in French language learning and acquisition as part of the three-year language study programme and is aimed at students of all levels: from beginners to advanced. At a theoretical level, the study of the relationship between oral and written code is proposed through phonemes and graphemes and the study of morphosyntaxis and phrase in contrasting optics with Italian. At a practical level, the development of reception, production, interaction and mediation is proposed at different levels, corresponding to CEFR levels A1, A2 and B1.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: knowledge of the phonetic system, its representation in API, spelling correspondence, knowledge of contrastive analysis applied to morphosyntax, knowledge of the basic vocabulary (1500/2000 words), knowledge of the self-assessment grid of one's language level according to the CEFR. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: achievement of B1 level not yet complete for all linguistic-communicative activities: reception (listening and reading), production (short exposés on the topics studied, writing under dictation and short texts), interaction (exchanges limited to the topics studied) and mediation (short presentations of a text) and development of the related strategies. Linguistic analysis of written and oral code, morphosyntax, sentence and text.

Course syllabus
The course is entitled Phonetic and graphic transcriptions, Words and Texts of Contemporary French and consists of the following two teaching parts, which will be teached in sequence:
A (20 hours): Phonetic and graphic transcriptions of contemporary French [Prof. Monica Barsi]
B (20 hours): Words and uses of contemporary French I [Prof. Thérèse Manconi]
C (20 hours): Words and uses of contemporary French II [Prof. Thérèse Manconi]
The course provides 9 ECTS. It is not possible to accrue only 6 ECTS.
In the first part of the course, the focus will be on the correspondence between graphemes and phonemes and on the graphic and phonetic transcription of words and sentences. In the second part, the linguistic analysis will concern some lexical and morphosyntactic peculiarities in use in contemporary French, from an Italian/French contrasting point of view, based on some textual typologies among which narrative from modern and contemporary novels, plays, poems and newspaper articles). In this case, each text will be examined for the lexical peculiarities, the morphosyntactic structures in a contrastive perspective and for the main rhetorical strategies. At the end of the course a guided self-assessment will be proposed to reflect on one's own progress and on the linguistic level reached according to the descriptors of the Global Scale of the Common European Framework of Reference.
The course programme is valid until September 2024. From the 2025 winter session, exclusively the A.A. 2023-24 course programme will be valid.

Teaching methods
The course adopts the following teaching methods: classroom lessons and online activities. In addition, the course is supplemented by practical classes, for which please refer to the Esercitazioni form. For this academic year see the provisions for the emergency phase.
Teaching Resources
The course has a website on the online platform for teaching Ariel (https://mbarsilfr1.ariel.ctu.unimi.it/v5/home/Default.aspx), to which you can refer for notes of lessons and other materials provided by teachers. For each teaching unit, the contents and activities related to them will be made available on the site in order to prepare the exam. Assessment methods and Criteria
Written and oral examination:
Written part: grammar test (20 min.); lexical test (20 min.); dictation-translation; two tests (30+30 min) on the contents of the monographic course (during the examination the use of the dictionary is allowed only for the part of the test of the monographic course concerning the text).
Oral part: vocabulary and grammar test (not preliminary to the Written part); presentation of one's own linguistic profile according to the CEFR self-evaluation grid, to be carried out when all written and oral parts have been passed.
Students who attend (no more than two absences per semester are allowed) may take the 'partial' tests of the practical classes (Esercitazioni) after each semester; these partial tests replace the written part of the Esercitazioni. They can also take the two tests of the monographic course in the partial test at the end of the lessons; these tests replace the final tests of the monographic course. Students not attending the course must pass the tests of the Esercitazioni and the tests of the monographic course during a written exam. Students who attend and those who do not attend must pass the oral part of the Esercitazioni and the monographic course in the same way.
The exam consists of the described tests evaluated in 30ths. The grade of the language exam will be unique and will take into account the outcome of all the tests: the average of all the parts of the language that must be equal to 18/30 or a higher grade and the average of the votes of the monographic course of which each part must be equal to 18/30 or a higher grade. The written and oral exams relating to the same year may be taken in free succession, but the oral part of the monographic course is necessarily conclusive. At the end of the latter part of the oral examination, i.e. the presentation of one's own linguistic profile, the final vote will be calculated. Students can view their written exams concerning the practical classes with the language experts and exams concerning the monographic course with the titular teacher.
Students who have obtained a B1 and higher certification or an Esabac (since 2017) must only take the written and oral part of the monographic course.
International students or incoming Erasmus students are invited to contact the teacher as soon as possible. The examination procedures for students with disabilities and/or with DSA must be agreed with the teacher, in agreement with the competent office.
