Feed Formulation and Production Technologies
A.Y. 2022/2023
Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the knowledge to deal professionally with the activity of industrial production of compound foods for the main farmed species. The feed production will be evaluated considering food safety and security issues.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student knows the organization and structure of the feed mill, the techniques and the purposes of the feeding mill processing , the legislative rules governing the production and marketing of feed and premixes, knows the nutritional characteristics of the main raw materials used for the production of compound feed and evaluates the environmental implications due to the choice of the raw materials used in a perspective of environmental and economic sustainability of production.

Course syllabus
Structure of the Italian feed industry. Current legislative framework for the production of compound feed (complementary, complete), premix and additive. Requiriments, transport, reception, quality control, handling and storage of raw materials (cereals, oilseed cakes and flours, flours of animal origin, other simple feeds and by-products). Nutritional value of raw materials. The formulation of feed. Processing: machines, processes, technological and nutritional implications of the main treatments implemented in the feed mill (grinding, crushing, extrusion, micronization and pelleting). Heat treatments for the destruction of thermolabile antinutritive factors. Quality control on the finished product. Good manufacturing practices. Production of additives and premixes. Production regulations: rules relating to animal rationing. Relationship between feed used in the ration and environmental sustainability. EFSA and technical dossier preparation for the registration of a feed additive in the EU catalog: presentation of some case studies.
Prerequisites for admission
Knowledge about ration formulation of livestock and evaluation of feed ingredients for the different animal species
Teaching methods
Lectures, computer classroom exercises for the formulation of a compound feed, visits to commercial feeding mills, external seminars, independent individual/group research and presentation to the class of additives/alternative feed ingredients for the feed mill industry.
Teaching Resources

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will consist of an oral test aimed at evaluating the acquired knowledge. The student will also formulate and label a feed compound which will be discussed during the exam. During the lab formulation classes, the student will learn to formulate a compound feed with a software used in the feed mill. The same software will be used by the student to formulate the compound feed which will be discussed during the exam. Moreover, during lab formulation classes, the evaluation of environmental impact for the production of compound feed will be done using a software developed for European countries.
