Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with a solid general knowledge of the basic concepts, theoretical frameworks and methodological instruments of Cultural Anthropology, and to enable them to use the anthropological thought as a critical contribution to their own future studies, researches and activities in intercultural contexts.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, the student
- knows the theoretical fundamentals of Cultural Anthropology;
- knows the main perspectives of anthropological reflection about culture, worldviews, cultural diversity;
- knows the main methodological instruments (including participant observation as immersive research practice and the comparative method) and and the basic bibliographic elements of intellectual work in the field of Cultural Anthropology.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, the student
- can put forward and outline the main conceptual contributions of Cultural Anthropology;
- can articulate anthropological reflections with respect to specific contexts;
- can apply knowledge for the purpose of i
nterpreting and commenting situations, written and oral texts, videos and social media contents;
- can deal with bibliographies in the anthropological domain.

Course syllabus
1. 6 credits program:
a) Introduction to cultural anthropology. Perspectives and research topics
Introduction to the theoretical framework, main research topics and methodologies of cultural anthropology.

b) Introduction to the Anthropology of Cultural Heritage. Tangible and intangible cultural heritage, perspectives, history, research topics, problematic issues, dynamics. The international discussion on cultural heritage and the Italian case from an anthropological perspective.

2. Additional part for the 9 credits program:
Anthropology of cultural heritage: case studies of archives and heritage of nation and migration and on the connection between social research and cultural representations

The program for attending and non-attending students for 6 credits is the same.

The course is aimed specifically at students of the BA-level course in Studies of Cultural heritage
The course allows you to acquire the credits of the area C - Anthropology - necessary for accessing teaching in Italian secondary school.

2. Additional part for the 9 credits program:
In this unit we will discuss case studies of national and migration heritage production and migration as well as connections between social research and cultural representation, drawing on the following 3 basic texts (students can choose between various essays contained in the different books, for a total of approximately 150 pages, or choose one of the following books; the second option is recommended for non-attending students).
1- "Antropologia" scientific Journal, issue dedicated to "Il patrimonio culturale", edited by Irene Maffi (articles freely downloadable at the following address: https://www.ledijournals.com/ojs/index.php/antropologia/issue/view/13, in in particular the case studies analyzed by the authors Herzfeld, Palumbo, Tahan, Alfieri and the reflective contributions of Poulot and Clemente);
2- A.C. Cimoli, Approdi. Musei delle migrazioni in Europa, Bologna, CLUEB, 2018;
3- G. Bacci, Confini. Viaggi nell'arte contemporanea, Postmedia books, 2022.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Oral exam aimed at ascertaining the knowledge of the textbooks focusing on: theoretical frames, methodology, research topics and case-studies of the discipline.
Evaluation criteria: Knowledge of the theoretical frames, methodology, research topics case-studies, communication and linguistic competence.
