Learning objectives
The course aims at introducing students to the knowledge of the events of the contemporary era and to the understanding of the political and institutional Italian, european and international history. Particular attention will be dedicated to the main trends in the historiography and to the analysis of the cultural, social and economic elements of the historical process.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will be provided with the knowledge of the main events and actors of the contemporary history in the XIX and XX centuries. They will also be able to use the main methodological instruments to analyze trends in historiography and to acquire an adequate terminology.

The course is structured in three modules:
1)
Introduction to contemporary history.
The elements characterizing the "age of empires".
The imperialist instances in the crisis of the end of the century
2)
The First World War: causes, distinctive elements, consequences.
February and October Revolution in Russia. Orthodox Marxism and Leninism. Constituent elements of the Bolshevik State
Perfect and imperfect totalitarianism: essential characters.
World War II: Causes and distinctive features. War crimes on the Eastern Front.
3)
Elements of 20th century costume history.
The First Republic.
The Cold War: ideological, socio-economic, technological-scientific conflict between the superpowers and the peripheral wars.
Tensions and conflicts in the Middle East: the State of Israel and the Arab-Israeli Wars.
Decolonization: Wars for Independence
The Return of the War in Europe: Interethnic Conflicts and Imperial Aspirations
The 1970s in perspective: a decade of changes.
The end of the Cold War: issues, interpretations, periodization.
Prerequisites for admission
The knowledge acquired during the curriculum of higher studies, in particular of the linguistic, historical and geographical areas constitute the conceptual heritage essential to address the topics proposed in the course.
Teaching methods
The duration of the course is 60 hours. The course will mainly consist of lectures (2 hours each). There will be additional seminar events with invited experts/scholars. Lectures will include class discussions following presentations and viewing of multimedia material. Course attendance is strongly recommended.
