Learning objectives
The course offers, firstly, a disciplinary framework for the teaching of foreign languages with particular reference to the teaching of French as a foreign language and, secondly, a framework for the teaching methods that have followed one another since the middle of the last century until today. The study will focus on the theoretical characteristics that a teacher must take into account in his choices and on the didactic applications according to some guidelines: what is the 'language', how to learn it, how to teach it and with which materials. Teaching is in fact a constant decision-making process: the teacher chooses continuously at the level of method, objectives, activities and procedures according to his beliefs, the indications of the programs and practical considerations.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: the student becomes aware of the European reference documents and the succession of methods and materials for teaching the français langue étrangère over time. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: the student learns in this first approach to teaching French to make informed choices in planning, teaching and assessing a foreign language through the example of French as a foreign language.

Course syllabus
The course is entitled Learning, Teaching and Evaluating Languages between the 20th and 21st Centuries and consists of the following two parts, which will be covered in sequence:

Part A: (20 hours, 3 ECTS): Il Français Langue Etrangère between the 20th and 21st centuries
Part B: (20 hours, 3 ECTS): The Companion Volume of the Common European Framework of Reference

The course provides 6 ECTS. It is not possible to accrue 9 ECTS.

In the first part of the course we will study the methods that have constituted a reference in the 20th century in the field of language teaching and in particular of français langue étrangère teaching. The grammatical method, the direct method, the technological methods (audio-lingual and audio-visual), the affective-humanistic methods, the communicative method will be examined at a theoretical and applicative level and exemplified by some typical lessons. In the second part of the course the novelties and potentialities presented by the Companion Volume will be considered, namely the vision of the "action-oriented approach", the overcoming of the four-skills model replaced by production, reception, interaction and mediation as modes of communication and multilingual/multi-cultural competence.
The course programme is valid until February 2023. From the 2023 summer session, exclusively the A.A. 2022-23 course programme will be valid.
