History of Contemporary Drama

Learning objectives
The course aims to provide a specialized knowledge and methological study of contemporary theatre, by referring to supranational situations of theatre and performance. The second unit focuses on methods of acting in the actor's work between theory and practise. The third unit deals with the evolution of the Italian contemporary show, with particular reference to directing theatre, in order to understand the performance process, including the relationship between the actor and the director.
Expected learning outcomes
After completing the course students will have the methodological and critical skills to analyse the performance process, as well as through the specialized knowledge of the historical-social context in which contemporary dramas and theatrical productions originated. In particular, the student is able to deal with critical awareness the analysis of Italian contemporary productions, especially with directing theatre.

Part A (20 hours - 3 cfu): Between directing theatre and performance: an international overview
Part B (20 hours - 3 cfu): The Actor work in 20th century between theory and practise
Part C (20 hours - 3 cfu): Giorgio Strehler and Luca Ronconi at Piccolo Teatro
The course aims to analyse the dramatic theatre during 20th century, moving from main theories about his artistic function, and analysing different models of work in directing theatre, avant-garde, experimental groups and performance art. The first part focuses on international stage evolution in the second half of the twentieth century. The second part deals with Italian contemporary stage, with particular reference to Giorgio Strehler's and Luca Ronconi's work at Piccolo Teatro .

Prerequisites for admission
The course is addressed to students of Master degree in Music, Theatre and Film and is open to master students of Humanities, History, Languages and Philosophy. Knowledge of basic concepts of History of the Western theatre and historical chronology of contemporary literature and general culture are recommended. Lectures are all in Italian language.
Teaching methods
The course aims to provide a shared methodology to study the performing arts with critic and historical skills. It focuses not only on script history but also on the material history of performances and on the contribution of actor on stage in terms of artistic creation.
To achieve its objective, teaching will use diverse sources (literary documents, reviews and audiovisual materials) and take a comparative methodological approach keeping into account the different contribution to the field of study provided by different disciplines - literature, fine arts, social and economic history.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of an oral test that aims to assess the students' knowledge of history of contemporary theatre and of the subjects on the programme, with particular attention to disciplinary terminology, argumentation skills and explanatory precision.
