Learning objectives
This course aims to give both the knowledge of printed editions' textual problems, and the knowledge of the authorial philology's matters when the editor publishes some writers' autographs. As far as it concerned the printed books, the lessons will give a presentation of printers' work of the first and following centuries, and, at the same time, they will give the tools for analysing a book from a textual bibliography point of view; in the field of authorial philology, the course will underline the ways of a manuscript texts' critical edition, with the representation of authorial variants.
Expected learning outcomes
At end of course, the student will have known both the ways of texts' edition and the ways of books' printing (in the past and in contemporary age), and how to study the writers' autographs. With the theoretical and technical knowledge concerning the printed books, the student will have gain the ability to analyse, from a philological point of view, both ancient and modern books, so as he will have acquired the ability to read the writers' autographs, to recognise the problems that their edition can produce, to define the best characters of their editions.

Lessons of this course will be held in remote mode, mainly in synchronous form, through TEAMS platform, and will make use of educational materials, images and videos that will be available on the Ariel website, on the teaching page (https://acadiolifts.ariel.ctu.unimi.it/v5/home/Default.aspx). Asynchronous lessons will be indicated in advance on the Ariel page of the teching (https://acadiolifts.ariel.ctu.unimi.it/v5/home/Default.aspx).

Prerequisites for admission
It is necessary to have developed some preliminary knowledge of philology's methods, tools and objectives.
Teaching methods
This course is based on frontal lessons, during which textual and visual materials are presented, which will be available in Ariel, on the teaching site. The last lesson of each block will be set so that those who have attended the lessons can ask questions and ask for clarifications, which can also be anticipated to the teacher by email. Attendance, although not compulsory, is strongly recommended.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Test consists of an oral interview on the topics presented during the lessons and, for those who have not attended the lessons, on the topics presented in the publications indicated in the examination programme. The exam aims to verify the student's ability to show the knowledge acquired and to express it correctly, using specialist vocabulary.
