Teaching Workshop
A.Y. 2020/2021
Learning objectives
The aim of the laboratory is to provide an overview of the essential sources for understanding the history of Christianity and the necessary tools (methodological, bibliographic and archivistic). The analysis of the documents will be taught together with the written processing of the results of the research.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the workshop, the students will have acquired the knowledge of the main kinds of sources relating to the history of Latin Christianity and the most important tools of research. They will be able to orient themselves in the documentation related to the history of Christianity, (published and, when possible, unpublished too). They will then be able to use the specialized terminology to express in written form, clearly and effectively, the results of the research conducted under the guidance of the teacher.
These skills will be acquired through a direct and ongoing meeting with the teacher in the classroom. The discussion around the proposed sources will provide critical reflection and methodological learning as well as bibliographic acquisition. Individual work will also be of great importance, with reports assigned by the teacher and then discussed collectively.
Students unable to attend could use the educational tools provided on Ariel, investigate special readings to strengthen their knowledge and, of course, contact the teacher both by email and during the office hours.

Course syllabus
The workshop focuses on the analysis and commentary of a corpus of sources for the history of Christianity, concentrating particularly on the period from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages. Different types of sources will be examined (hagiographic, normative, homiletic, documentary, judicial, literary, odeporic, epistolary), with the analysis of one or more specific examples for every source.
Each source will be introduced and commented starting from the historical-religious and cultural context to which it belongs, paying special attention to dating, author, client, typology, lexicon, and historical dynamics. The reading and analysis will be aimed at guiding the student in questioning the sources correctly, bringing out the main historical-religious problems they pose.
