Learning objectives
The workshop aims to deepen the students' knowledge on the structural and formal characteristics of the ancient book, useful for the recognition of the standards of bibliographic description within the digital support system. Particular attention will be paid to the awareness of cataloguing procedures, with the analysis of call-cards for the Servizio Bibliotecario Nazionale (SBN) and of the survey of the Edizioni Italiane del XVI secolo (Edit16) of the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU).
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the workshop, students will have acquired a basic knowledge of the historical features of the press and will be able to recognize and interpret the structural and formal elements of the ancient book: the paper, the format, the typeface, the cover page, the mode of page construction, the marking of the pages, the illustrative apparatus and the editorial brand. They will also have knowledge and ability to apply ISBD(A) bibliography description rules and the Regole Italiane di Catalogazione for SBN. These skills will be acquired through a direct interaction with the instructor, which will also allow them time to compete exercises assigned in the classroom. Although attendance is strongly recommended, any absences on the part of the students can be made up by using the teaching tools made available by the instructor on the Ariel platform, reading on the various topics addressed in the classroom in accordance with the instructor and, of course, contacting the instructor himself.

Title of the course: The ancient printed book
Prerequisites for admission
There are no specific requirements different from those requested for the degree admission.
Teaching methods
Attendance to classes is mandatory.
The Laboratory consists of lessons aimed at providing the student with insights on the structural and formal characteristics of the ancient book, useful for understanding the standards of bibliographic description.
Particular attention will be paid to the knowledge of scientific cataloging procedures through the analysis of bibliographic records present in the National Library Service (SBN) and in the National Census of the Italian Editions of the 16th century (Edit16) by the Central Institute for the Unique Catalog (ICCU).
The laboratory is divided into three parts:
Part 1.: Outlines of the history of printing.
Part 2: Structural and formal elements of the ancient book: the paper, the format, the typeface, the title page, the layout, the signature of the files, the illustrative apparatus and the editorial brand.
Part 3 .: The ISBD (A) bibliographic description areas and the Italian Cataloging Rules for SBN.
These skills will be acquired primarily through the performance of classroom activities, with practical exercises aimed at developing bibliographic records of ancient works kept in the Fondazione Mansutti and in the Library of the Società Storica Lombarda
The discussion in the classroom with the teacher is an integral part of the teaching method and aims to promote the critical spirit and the ability to apply the skills and knowledge acquired to the student.

Assessment methods and Criteria
- Method: evaluation at the end of the course
- Type of examination: in itinere assessment and at the end of the course, on the basis of attendance of lectures and the elaboration of bibliographic cards of ancient editions.
- Evaluation criteria: ability to demonstrate and elaborate knowledge; ability for critical reflection on the completed work; quality of expression, competence in the use of specialised lexicon.
- Type of evaluation method: approval of 3 cfu
