Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to reflect on some aspects of the current Spanish language, the main varieties and its diffusion in the world. In particular, the phonetic-phonological system, the formation of words and the most relevant characteristics of specialized languages will be studied.
The course includes a theoretical introduction and an applicative part, oriented to the critical analysis of texts in the context of the discursive genre to which they belong. It is also proposed to develop written and oral skills, with particular regard to the expository text. At the same time, the acquisition of basic grammatical structures will also be promoted through the communicative use.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students are expected to obtain the B1 level of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), in reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. They will also be able to analyze autonomously the main functional and lexical aspects of a text.

TEACHING METHODS
In the first term of 2020-21, the course will be taught entirely online, as will language practice sessions ("esercitazioni"). The lessons will be held on the Microsoft Teams platform and can be followed synchronously based on the timetable of the first term; only in specific cases, which will be communicated in advance, synchronous lectures will be replaced by commented PDFs. For the second term, updates will be provided as soon as possible.

The exams could be modified in relation to sanitary conditions, but all changes will be available in due time.

Course syllabus
The course is structured on the following teaching units:
1. "Aspectos del español actual"
The diffusion of Spanish around the world; main varieties of peninsular and American Spanish; Spanish and official languages in Spain. Phonetic-phonological characteristics of the main varieties of Spanish, also in a Spanish-Italian contrasting key. Lexical variation and procedures for the formation of words.
2. "Introducción a las lenguas de especialidad"
Introduction to text linguistics and discourse genres. Introduction to specialist languages; language of advertising and media, scientific dissemination, language of tourism, literary language. Critical reading of texts of different kinds (e.g. advertisements, news, technical manual, tourist guide, reports, etc.).
For up-to-date information on the organisation of the courses and the activities proposed, students are invited to regularly consult the Plataforma de español of Ariel (http://plataformaesmedlin.ariel.ctu.unimi.it). Within the Plataforma students can carry out self-assessment tests, exercises and other self-learning activities; in addition, students can find materials related to the courses, bibliographical information and other news of interest.
The examination procedures are the same for all students. Non-attendants students are advised to attend professor's office hours at least once a year.
EXERCISES CLASSES
The course includes a cycle of exercise classes divided into three levels.
The exercise classes for beginners (80 hours, 1st and 2nd semester) aim at acquiring basic grammatical structures through communicative use. They are also recommended for students with limited language skills (level A1-A2). At the end of the course, the student must reach a level not lower than level B1 (threshold level of the European Framework of Reference), which requires a good control of the language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking).
Intermediate level exercise classes (60 hours, I and II semester) propose a consolidation of B1 level, with particular attention to the practice of grammatical structures and the strengthening of vocabulary. They are aimed in particular at students who have followed Spanish courses in the school curriculum (non-certified B1 level)
Advanced level exercise classes (40 hours, 1st semester) are reserved for students with DELE B2 or higher levels, or native Spanish speakers. The aim is to deepen the communicative use of the language in professional contexts.
Class attendance is strongly recommended.
Prerequisites for admission
The course does not require any prior knowledge of the Spanish language and can also be attended by absolute beginners, with the appropriate support of exercise lessons.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will include a series of written and oral tests, organized as it follows:
WRITTEN EXAM: it takes place 3 times a year (May, September, January) and includes the following tests (to be carried out without vocabulary):
1) Computerized grammar test: 50 multiple-choice questions. The test is aimed at assessing basic morphosynthactic skills, with particular attention to complete conjugations of regular and irregular verbs. Time available: 40 minutes
2) test of listening comprehension, written comprehension and written production skills, also aimed at assessing lexical skills in the main everyday situations (variable number of multiple choice and open-ended questions; written production from a trace). Time available: 75 minutes.
The computerized test is preparatory to the other language tests, which will have to be taken on the same day.
Students who attend Spanish language exercise lessons will be able to take the test indicated in point 2) during the year; in the overall assessment, any midterm test carried out during the exercise hours will be taken into account.

ORAL EXAMINATION (6 times per year): exam to be held in Spanish on the topics of the "official course", including 15 commented texts (according to the pattern provided in chapter 3 of the book "Las lenguas de especialidad"), chosen from those in the lecture notes.
All students are required to bring to the exam their own text analysis. The test is aimed at assessing, in addition to the production and oral exposition skills, the knowledge of the course contents and the ability to critically read the texts.


Students who attend the main course will be able to carry out a midterm test during the year. At the oral exam they are required to expose the texts analyzed during the course, in addition to the one prepared on their own behalf.

Important warnings
- It is not recommended to take the oral exam without having passed the written test.
- Test exam mark is valid for one year.
- The validity of interim tests is specified when the results are published.
- Registering of the final marks can be made only at the oral tests, after enrollment.
- To take the exams, both written and oral, it is essential to be enrolled.
Furthermore, enrolled students who decide not to take the exam, are kindly requested to unsuscribe in order to allow a better organization of the exam
Students with one of the following certifications are exempt from the computerised test:
Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE) - Nivel avanzado (B2), issued by the Instituto Cervantes.
Certificado Básico de Español de los Negocios (B2), issued by Cámara de Comercio e Industria de Madrid
Students are required to present the original certificate on the day of the examination. This certificate must not be more than 5 years old.
