Learning objectives
The course aims at providing a general overview on the history of Spanish culture, focusing on the main historical, political, social and economic changes of the country. Some meaningful moments will be examined, analysing their distinctive cultural productions. Other important features will be outlined, in particular the relationship between culture, discursive strategies, social phenomena, mass communication, production and consumption of cultural products; all these aspects will be analysed through the lens of ideology and of socio-spatial, historical and political conditions, which represent the essential prerequisite.
Expected learning outcomes
The course aims to develop the ability to understand the most significant changes of Spain from a social, political, economic and cultural point of view. It will focus on the knowledge of these phenomena, applied to the interpretation of cultural products in different fields (movies, literature, art). This will lead to a better understanding of the essential constituents and references of the context of production, as well as creating connections and comparisons.

Lessons will be mainly held on the Microsoft Teams platform and can be followed both in synchrony (as scheduled) and asynchronous because they will be registered and left available to students on the same platform. They may also be held with with video and audio recordings that will also be uploaded and available to students on Teams and Ariel.

According to the university directions, the oral exam will be held on Teams platform and aims to verify the understanding and mastery of the field and the ability to critically re-elaborate contents of different nature as well as the student's independent judgement.

Spain in the 20th century
A wide overview of Spanish history during the twentieth century, with an in-depth analysis of the main events: from the end of the colonial empire to the Second Republic, from the civil War to the advent of Franco dictatorship, up to the democratic transition and the present days.

Protagonists and ideas (Spanish cultural production between the 20th and 21st centuries)
Portraits of Machado, Gaudí, Manuel de Falla, Clara de Campoamor, García Lorca, Dolores Ibarruri, Picasso, Dalí, Buñuel, Francisco Franco, Juan Carlos, Almodóvar, Juan Manuel Serrat, Camarón de la Isla, Trueba, Amenabar, Miró, Tapies, Cillida e Oteiza.

Prerequisites for admission
Knowledge of Spanish language isn't mandatory; however, some sources will have to be consulted in the original language. Beginners will nevertheless be provided with all the support needed to correct interpreting the material.

Mixed distance teaching through synchronous and asynchronous lessons, Powerpoint material, material uploaded on the Arial platform, interactive group works.

1) Study and comment on the selection of Machado's poems uploaded on Ariel
2) Choose one of Gaudí's projects and examine it in details.
3) Listen to and study Manuel de Falla's El amor brujo or El sombrero a tres picos, with related literary and cinematographic adaptations.
4) See and discuss parts of the movies inspired by Clara de Campoamor's and Dolores Ibarruri's biographies.
5) See the documentaries on García Lorca's life and study the selection of García Lorca's texts on Ariel
6) See and analyse at least a movie of Almodovar's, Trueba's and Amenabar's.
7) Read and study the critical essays on Picasso's Guernica uploaded on Ariel.
8) Study the works of Picasso, Mirò, Tapies, Cillida and Oteiza on Ariel.
9) See Buñuel's docufilm Las Hurdes and the animation film En el laberinto de las tortugas (Premio Goya 2020 por mejor película de animación)
10) Listen to and study the Canciones populares antiguas (García Lorca playing at the piano, the Argentinita singing), read García Lorca's charlas on cante jondo and the andalusian musical and poetic heritage, and the musical tribute to the major 20th century poets by Juan Manuel Serrat (homenaje a Antonio Machado y a Miguel Hernández), Lole y Manuel y Camaron de la Isla (Romancero gitano de Lorca).

Assessment methods and Criteria
The oral exam is scheduled at the end of the second semester: it aims to evaluate the students' knowledge of the topics discussed in class in the first part of the accademic year, verify the knowledge and understanding of the social, historical, political and economic phenomena analysed during the course. Subjects of the exam are the ability of seize the existential constituent of the cultural products faced in the program as well as the reference to the historical, political and social conditions that have contributed to cause them. Furthermore, communication skills and the ability to provide argumentation will be tested. It will be held in Italian.
