Learning objectives
The course aims to provide the basic knowledge of the history and culture of Japan, from the earliest archaeological evidence of the Paleolithic to the first half of the XIX century. The course is conducted following a historical and chronological progression, and includes basic knowledge of literature, arts and philosophical-religious thought.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student must have assimilated the specificities of Japanese history and culture, as a product of national political strategies and political-economic dynamics of East Asia.

Second semester
The course is scheduled for the second semester. In case of persistence of the sanitary emergency, the program will be carried out as follows:
- Lessons will be mainly asynchronous, with audio lessons in PPT, uploaded to ARIEL at the scheduled teaching time.
- For clarifications and insights on the main topics of the course, for students' questions and to stimulate a discussion amongst participants, at least two meetings per month will be held, in person or trough Microsoft Teams. The modality, which will depend on the developments of the sanitary emergency and the regulations in force, will be communicated in advance through the ARIEL notice board of the course.
- The program and the reference material will not change.
Since all information on the organization of lessons, on the access codes to Microsoft Teams and on the course in general will be available on ARIEL, a continuous consultation is recommended.
Course syllabus
From the earliest archaeological remains of Paleolithic to the Heian period (794-1185); the Middle Ages (XII-XVI centuries); the 'modern age': Edo period (1600-1867).

Lasting the emergency phase, the lessons will be mainly in asynchronous mode, with audio lessons in PPT. Moreover, at least two meetings per monthwill be held, on Microsoft Teams or in the classroom.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will be oral, on Microsoft Teams or, depending on regulations relating to the sanitary emergency, will be taken in person.
The exam will concern the topics of the course, and will aim to verify the assimilation of the specificities of Japanese history and culture, as a product of the national political strategies and the political-economic dynamics of East Asia, and the critical autonomy of the student.
Part of the course and of the corresponding exam will be considered the viewing and critical analysis of some historical films, uploaded to ARIEL or, when it will be possible, shown in the classroom.
