Learning objectives
Object of the course is presenting the methodology of philological investigation applied to vulgar texts of all ages, especially to literally ones, transmitted by single or multiple witnesses. Deepen the knowledge of specific terminology, of different techniques of analysis, and the creation of critical apparatus.
Expected learning outcomes
Critical ability in the interpretation of vulgar and Italian texts; ability to establish meaningful connections between the witnesses of tradition by clarifying the history of the single witness and the work of the individual copyist, within the historical context that generated them and putting them in relation to the historical and biographical events of the author. Mastery of bibliographic and methodological tools related to the course. Awareness of the concepts and technical terminology of philology.

Course syllabus
Parts A-B: The text of the Sermons by A. Manzoni.
Starting from the analysis of the handwritten witnesses, the teacher will present the history of the Sermons by A. Manzoni and on the basis of the specific bibliography he will address the definition of the textual structure; in addition, will be discussed the criteria to prepare the critical edition.
Part C: Il ms. Vat. lat. 3197 of Petrarch's Canzoniere.
We will analyze different aspects of the manuscript Vat. Lat. 3197 autograph by Pietro Bembo, which forms the basis of the edition of Petrarca's rhymes printed by Aldo Manuzio in 1501. Will also be examinated the textual criteria that guided Bembo.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The oral exam will evaluate the ability to organize the speech, to critically present the subject treated, and the specific knowledge, the terminological competence and the use of specific vocabulary.
