Learning objectives
The course aims to develop reading and writing abilities and metalinguistic reflection through the use of descriptive, narrative and instructional texts. It also seeks to provide a basic sociolinguistic panorama of contemporary Italian and a panorama of Italian language outside Italy. The exercises provide activities to improve listening and speaking skills. The aim is consistent with the goal of the CdS to create a qualified professional figure of a culturally aware language expert.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course a student will be able to produce and understand clear and well structured descriptions, narratives and instructions. He/she will furthermore be able to identify the main information in a text and reorganise it both orally and in writing. He/she will be aware of the diamesic, diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic varieties of Italian and of its evaluation outside Italy.

Should it become necessary to use online teaching, the program designed for face-to-face teaching is modified as follows.
Teaching methods.
Lessons will be held in synchronous mode, trying to enhance interaction (chat and forum), using MsTeams mainly; only in specific cases communicated to students, the lessons will be held in asynchronous mode (videolessons). In case there are activities in presence (following the indications of the university), students who cannot participate will be offered an alternative online activity that will allow them to develop the same linguistic skills of analysis and text production.
The timetable of the lessons remains unchanged and all the most important information will be provided through the ARIEL website pages of the course.
The methods and criteria for the lessons in attendance, which require a reservation with the appropriate app, will be published in good time on the ARIEL website pages of the course.

Course syllabus
Initially, the course provides an essential sociolinguistic overview of contemporary Italian. The following topics will be addressed: Italian-speaking outside Italy; teaching Italian to foreigners abroad and in Italy; the varieties of Italian diatopic, diamesic, diastratic and diaphasic.
Subsequently, there will be an introduction to the morphosyntactic, lexical and textual characteristics of the descriptive, regulative and informational or expository texts. The teaching material favors reflection on the precision of language and scientific languages, as well as various problems of style.

Prerequisites for admission
For the second year, the B2 level of competence is required, at least in understanding written and oral texts.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The students give an oral presentation of one or more articles of their choice from Italian press, for a total of 2000 words, on a social, literary, artistic, economic-legal topic. The verification is through questions of grammatical analysis and comprehension of the text, including topics covered in "Parte prima" of "Parlare l'italiano. Come usare meglio la nostra lingua" by Edoardo Lombardi Vallauri. The assessment takes into account participation and works produced during the course and exercises.
