Learning objectives
The course aims to provide a critical approach to Western artistic culture in the millennium between the birth of Christian art and the 13th century, with particular attention to monumental contexts, iconography and the function of artefacts, all within a historical and chronological framework.
Expected learning outcomes
Suitable knowledge of the main monumental contexts and artefacts of the Western Middle Ages; knowledge of the main historiographical lines. Ability to frame a medieval architecture or artefact placing it chronologically, recognising its function, illustrating its iconography, highlighting its technical and technical-constructive peculiarities, all using an appropriate vocabulary.

First semester
The lectures will be on line in synchronic mode on teams platform. All the informations about the lecures on the Ariel site of the professor. If there will be a different way of holding the exams this will be published on the Ariel site of the professor.

Title: Medieval Art between Byzantium and the Western World 313-1453


Part A: General introduction to Medieval art.
Part Unit B: Paleochristian art 3rd-5th century.
Part C: Early middle-ages 6th-10th century
Prerequisites for admission
Suitable knowledge of Greek and Roman art.
Suitable knowledge of Byzantine and Medieval history.
Suitable knowledge of the geographical area taken into consideration.
Suitable knowledge of the history, institutions, teachings of Christianism and of its principal denominations: Catholic, Orthodox, Protestantism.
It would be appreciated a basic notion of Greek and Latin languages.
Teaching methods
Lectures.
The course can be integrated by the workshop "Milano medievale: arte, architettura, contesti. Secoli IV-XIII" (20 hours, 3 cfu), which will take place in the first semester for a maximum of 25 students.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The examination consists of an interview aimed at verifying the acquired knowledge, the historical and chronological framing ability, the critical thinking and the speaking skills.

Lessons will take place online, through Microsoft Teams, team "Storia dell'arte medievale I-Z" (team code: tg23av3).
Students can find all the information to follow the lectures (links etc.), any changes in the program and any changes in the bibliography on the Ariel teaching site (Storia dell'arte medievale I-Z).
If it will not possible to take the exam according to the Syllabus, the exam will take place remotely following the instructions given on the Ariel teaching site at the end of the course.
Course syllabus
Title: "The History of Medieval Art Through Digital Media".

The following exam program will be valid for all students: there will be no distinction between attending and non-attending students, since all the lessons and all the materials will be available on the E-learning portals Ariel, Moodle, MS Teams, MS Stream.

The course aims to offer an approach to Western medieval art tailored to the specific nature of remote teaching.

- Part A (20 h, 3 cfu): Features of History of medieval art, 4th-14th centuries (Introduction to the Moodle handbook "Lineamenti di Storia dell'arte medievale").
- Part B (20 h, 3 cfu): Approaching paradigmatic contexts from the Early Christian age to the early Middle ages.
- Part C (20 h, 3 cfu): Introduction to Romanesque civilisation and its developments.

For 6 cfu: Parts A and B.
Prerequisites for admission
Suitable knowledge of the main historical facts and institutions of late antiquity and the Middle Ages in the West.
Teaching methods
Teaching will be provided mainly through video-lectures, mainly in synchronous and short time form (MS Teams, team "Storia dell'arte medievale I-Z", team code: tg23av3).
The recordings of all the lectures will be available on MS Stream (link: MS Teams chat and Ariel teaching site).
A Question time will periodically take place on MS Teams, in order to clarify and consolidate the topics covered, as well as encourage interaction between students and between student and professor.
For the same purpose, for the whole duration of the course on the Ariel teaching site the Forum "Discutiamone insieme!" (let's discuss it together!) will be active.
On the Ariel teaching site you will find the slides of the lectures, links to the recorded lectures on MS Stream, the link to the Moodle handbook, and other useful materials.
The course is linked to the Workshop "Medieval Milan. Art, architecture, contexts. 4th-13th centuries" (20 hours, 3 cfu), delivered by Dr. PhD Stella Ferrari.

The examination consists of an interview (face-to-face or by video-call, it depends on the evolution of the Covid-19 emergency) aimed at verifying the acquired knowledge, the historical and chronological framing ability, the critical thinking and the speaking skills.
