History of Medieval Art

Learning objectives
The course aims to provide a critical approach to Western artistic culture in the millennium between the birth of Christian art and the 13th century, with particular attention to monumental contexts, iconography and the function of artefacts, all within a historical and chronological framework.
Expected learning outcomes
Suitable knowledge of the main monumental contexts and artefacts of the Western Middle Ages; knowledge of the main historiographical lines. Ability to frame a medieval architecture or artefact placing it chronologically, recognising its function, illustrating its iconography, highlighting its technical and technical-constructive peculiarities, all using an appropriate vocabulary.

The course can be integrated by the workshop "Milano medievale: arte, architettura, contesti. Secoli IV-XIII" (20 hours, 3 cfu), which will take place in the first semester for a maximum of 25 students.

The examination consists of an interview aimed at verifying the acquired knowledge, the historical and chronological framing ability, the critical thinking and the speaking skills.

Title: "The History of Medieval Art Through Digital Media".
The following exam program will be valid for all students: there will be no distinction between attending and non-attending students, since all the lessons and all the materials will be available on the E-learning portals Ariel, Moodle, MS Teams, MS Stream.
The course aims to offer an approach to Western medieval art tailored to the specific nature of remote teaching.
- Part A (20 h, 3 cfu): Features of History of medieval art, 4th-14th centuries (Introduction to the Moodle handbook "Lineamenti di Storia dell'arte medievale").
- Part B (20 h, 3 cfu): Approaching paradigmatic contexts from the Early Christian age to the early Middle ages.
- Part C (20 h, 3 cfu): Introduction to Romanesque civilisation and its developments.
For 6 cfu: Parts A and B.
The following exam program will be valid for all students: there will be no distinction between attending and non-attending students, since all the lessons and all the materials will be available on the E-learning portals Ariel, Moodle, MS Teams, MS Stream.

A Question time will periodically take place on MS Teams, in order to clarify and consolidate the topics covered, as well as encourage interaction between students and between student and professor.

On the Ariel teaching site you will find the slides of the lectures, links to the recorded lectures on MS Stream, the link to the Moodle handbook, and other useful materials.
