Learning objectives
The course aims to present the main economic-business theories applied to the health sector and to provide the operational tools deriving from these theories. The usual economic and business issues of organizations that provide health services and the main management functions in healthcare companies will be examined.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to understand the main economic-business theories applied to the health sector and the operational tools deriving from them. Furthermore, the student will be able to recognize the usual economic and business problems of the organizations that provide health services and the main management functions in healthcare companies.

Course syllabus
The course aims to provide knowledge and conceptual tools related to the functioning of healthcare organizations, considering the specificities of the health system. The course will present and discuss the main management functions that characterize a healthcare organization and the more advance management trends and innovations, with a specific focus on public sector.
More specifically, the lessons will focus on the following topics:
- Governance of health care systems and organizations
- Planning, programming and control systems in healthcare organizations
- Human resource management in healthcare organizations
- Business - government relations and Purchasing in healthcare organizations
- Operations management in healthcare organizations
- Management of innovation in healthcare organizations
- Public - Private Partnership
Prerequisites for admission
There are no specific requirements other than those for the access to the degree programme.
Teaching methods
In accordance with the introductory character of the subject, the classes aim to apply the theoretical notions studied to specific management issues related to healthcare oragnizations.
For this purpose, the frontal lessons will be complemented with:
- case studies and examples;
- firsthand experiences of operators involved in the management healthcare organization;
- examination of documents.

Additional materials
- Slides will be made available on the course website and are part of the exam program.
- During classes additional readings will be suggested to complete the program.
There are no differences in the program and in the exam readings between attending and non-attending students.
Assessment methods and Criteria
For attending student, the written test will focus on the subjects dealt with in class. The written aims at ascertaining the achievement of the objectives in terms of knowledge and comprehension, the ability to apply knowledge and understanding, the student's autonomy of judgment also through the analysis of cases discussed during the course. The exam also aims to understand written communication skills, especially in relation to the use of specific terminology related to management of healthcare organizations.
The students will work in groups to develop an assignment. Each assignment will be evaluated to a maximum of 5 points. These points will be added to the evaluation of the written test (starting from a minimum grade of 18/30). It is possible to take the exam as attending students (taking advantage of the bonus of additional points) only in the first exam session (July and September).

For non attending students the exam consists in a written test on the bibliography. The written aims at ascertaining the achievement of the objectives in terms of knowledge and comprehension, the ability to apply knowledge and understanding, the ability of the students to make autonomous judgements.
