Learning objectives
Along with their receptive, productive and interactive skills in German, students will also strengthen their mediation skills (which the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages considers a true fourth competence). Students will therefore be capable of translating, paraphrasing and summarizing B2-level texts while also taking into consideration differences between cultures. In particular, in accordance with the Degree objectives, systematic treatment will be given, from both a theoretical and applied perspective, to morphosyntactical and lexical (also phraseological) knowledge skills. The course is annual and covers two semesters.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will attain an intermediate level of German, which will allow them to express themselves (in both written and spoken German) with relative fluency on known topics. In addition to receptive, productive and interactive skills, students will also acquire mediation skills (considered by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languags as a true fourth competency). Students will therefore be capable of translating, paraphrasing and summarizing B2-level texts while also taking into consideration existing cultural differences. The students will also acquire metalinguistic knowledge that will allow them to recognize, understand and actively use morphosyntactic and lexical structures of a certain complexity; they will be able to identify the various types of complements and argument clauses of German, they will acquire the use of Korrelate; they will also expand their lexical knowledge, systematizing it also from a theoretical point of view (based on the semantic relationships between lexemes).

Course syllabus
Unit 1: Lexicology and Lexicography
The aim of this module is a theoretical and practical introduction to lexicology (the branch of linguistics that studies the vocabulary of a language) and lexicography (the linguistic discipline that is concerned with the compilation, use and evaluation of dictionaries) of German. Starting from the fundamental concepts (lexeme, lemma, loan, calque etc.) the basic structures of the lexicon as well as the relationships between the lexemes of a language (synonymy, homonymy, polysemy etc.) will be illustrated. We will then analyse the different types of monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, their structure and their use in learning a foreign language.

Unit 2: Syntax II
The course is intended to be a deepening and widening of the acquired knowledge. It will give ample space to typical morphosyntactical phenomena of German, often a cause of insecurity in Italian-speaking learners. In particular the following topics will be covered: argument clauses, the different functions of the pronoun "es", Korrelatesubjective and objective use of modal verbs. In addition to theoretical reflection, practical exercises will also be offered to students. The phenomena will always be studied from a contrastive (German-Italian) perspective.

This unit proposes a theoretical/practical study of translation as a dynamic process; it will be analysed in relation to the requirements, factors, possibilities and limits also dictated by cultural influences of German and Italian.
The various aspects mentioned are treated on the basis of German texts translated into Italian and applied to practical translation activities on texts belonging to various Textsorten.
There is no difference in the program between attending and non-attending students.

Receptive and productive German language skills at least equal to level A2 (Common Framework of Reference for Languages).
Teaching methods
The official units (mostly frontal modules) are complemented by language lessons with native speakers. Attendance at the courses, although not compulsory, is highly recommended. At the end of each semester, for the "esercitazioni", and for each module of the official courses, there will be tests in place of the official oral and written exams.
Languages of instruction are Italian and German (depending on the complexity of the subjects).
For units 1 and 2 the teaching uses e-learning tools on Moodle which will be supportive during the learning phase and which contain models of the final test.

The achievement of the expected learning outcomes will be ascertained through a written and an oral examination.
Written examination: It is divided into three parts. In the first and second part the students will have to carry out a comprehension exercise (Hörverstehen) and exercises in grammar, vocabulary and Landeskunde (filling, reformulation and multiple response) according to the model of those proposed during the exercises (100 minutes). In the third part the students have to summarise a text in 200 - 250 words which will be given to them (60 minutes). Mono- and/or bilingual dictionaries are not allowed in any of the parts.
Preparation for the written exam will take place during the practice hours, the frequency of which, although not compulsory, is strongly recommended. Attending and not attending students will be given the opportunity to take a test at the end of each semester. The two tests will replace the official written exam.
The written exam - as well as the partial ones - are computerized.
For students who do not pass the written exams will be organized in May/June, September and January/February, after the publication of the results. Days and times of recoveries will be announced through Ariel.
Oral exam: For units 1 and 2, the test is computerised, with closed questions of a theoretical and practical nature (duration: 40 minutes per unit); questions will be formulated in German. All students (attending or not) will be given the opportunity to take (for units 1 and 2 and as an alternative to the oral exam) an end-of-course test (following the same procedures as the official exam).
For the didactic unit 3 students will have to carry out a (written) translation from German into Italian. At the end of module 3 all students (attending or not) will be given the opportunity to take the (written) translation test; the use of mono- and bilingual dictionaries is allowed.
For all students there will also be an conversation in German which will take place during the official exams (oral exams); students will have to show that they can speak fluently in German and that they know elements of Landeskunde, dealt with during the exercises (and present in the textbook). The preparation for this test takes place during the exercises (see Ariel for materials).
The oral exam is taken after passing the written test. If no exams have been taken at the end of the module, the marks for the oral exams are valid only on the day the exam was taken and cannot be "kept" for subsequent sessions. The grades for the written test, the partials as well as the individual programs are valid within the three sessions for the academic year 2020-2021.
