Learning objectives
The course intends to foster the comprehension of the contemporary world, through the study of his historical roots beginning from the Nineteenth century to present times.
Expected learning outcomes
After the course, students must have a firm knowledge of the main subjects of Contemporary history, from 1848 to the present.

- SYNCHRONOUS EDUCATIONAL METHODS will be adopted: synchronous lessons on Microsoft Teams
- ASYNCHRONOUS DIDACTIC METHODS will be adopted as well: video and / or audio asynchronous lessons or with other materials (essays, images, diagrams), uploaded on Ariel or on Microsoft Teams.

The program and the reference material will not change.
Course syllabus
The United States between the 1950s and 1960s: Cold War, McCarthyism and civil rights struggles
- Unit 1:
The first unit will deal with the Cold War's impact on domestic and foreign policy of the United States with particular reference to the 1950s.
- Unit 2:
The second unit will deal with the most important changes in American society during the 1950s and 1960s, with particular reference to the civil rights movement and to new models of the consumer society.
- Unit 3:
The third uni twill deal with the developments of the Cold War under presidents Kennedy and Johnson, with particular reference to the Cuba crisis, the atomic bomb scare and the Vietnam War.

Students who intend to take the 3 or 6 CFU exam MUST AGREE UPON THE PROGRAM with one of the professors.
NB. ONLY students enrolled in the academic year 2019-2020 (and earlier) can take the 3 or 6 credits exam.
Prerequisites for admission
The Students must have a certain knowledge of the main events of contemporary history, from mid-1800s to the present times, which can be acquired through the study of Sabbatucci-Vidotto, Il mondo contemporaneo.
Teaching methods
During the lessons, the professors will outline the main events of the United States history, during the Fifties and the Sixties of the XX Century.
Through the vision of historical films, the course also aims to provide tools for the use of cinema as source for the study of history

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam is of an oral test aimed at ascertaining the students' knowledge of world history from the mid-1800s to the present times and, in particular, ot the United State history, during the Fifties and Sixties of the XX Century. It will be evaluated also the students' ability to analyse the texts and films indicated in the program.
