Learning objectives
The course aims at providing students with the basic notions of the history of central, southern and south-eastern Asia, as well as the methodological tools and lexicon to comprehend and adequately express the historical processes that have characterised Asia in its modern and contemporary period and to critically approach the most recent events that have taken place in this part of the world.
Expected learning outcomes
Objectives and learning outcomes of the course:
- have an understanding of the relationship between regional and global issues;
- draw connections between historical events and the social and cultural reality of the countries of the region;
- provide students with a comprehensive survey of the major institutional, social, and cultural developments of the period under examination.

Course syllabus
The first unit will analyse the events that led to the emergence of India and Pakistan and the disputes that since then have divided them, mostly related to the Kashmiri issue. These disputes are analysed within their regional context and in light of internal challenges , from ethnic and rleigious tensions to socio-economic disparity. The second unit aims at analysing the historical processes that charaterised China, Japan and other Southeast Asian countries from the colonial era until the end of the Second World War. The third unit aims at analysing the historical processes that charaterised East Asian countries and their mutual relations after the II world war.
