Learning objectives
The object of the course is the development of knowledge and methodology instruments necessary to face the theme of nature of archives, their past and present formation, their conservation even as regards the present rules, and their order and description.
Expected learning outcomes
Students are expected to know the contents of the texts settled for the exam; moreover, attending ones are required to know the subjects treated all over the course.
They should find their way among the various archival conservative institutes on the basis of their different juridical nature, and manyfold research devices in archives. They should also be able to expose the acquired contents clearly and correctly and to master the specific subject lexicon.

Second semester
In case the Covid emergency phase will continue during the second semester, the course will be held mainly by asynchronous lessons posted on platform Ariel, with the exception of some synchronous lectures using Microsoft Teams.
At the beginning of the second semester, on the course page on Ariel students will be able to find all the information on the lectures and any eventual changes to the programme and its related documents (bibliography etc.).
Finally, in case it proves impossible to hold the exam face to face, the exam will take place remotely, in ways which will be communicated on the course page on Ariel at the end of the course.
Course syllabus
Part A (20 hours, 3 cfu): Archives and records. Features of archival history.
Part B (20 hours, 3 cfu): Archival regulations. Finding aids.
Part C (20 hours, 3 cfu): Resettling and archives description. Histories of twentieth century's archives: crossroads between public and privat archives.

Prerequisites for admission
Basic knowledge of historical notions to be found in high schools manuals, form late Middle Ages to Contemporary age.
Teaching methods
Attendance to classes is recommended although not compulsory. The teaching is delivered mainly through frontal lectures aimed primarily at the acquisition of knowledge, competence and specific language of the subject. After the middle of the course a class training will be held with comments and discussion in the classroom. Besides, a few visits to archives will be organized. Warnings
About the study of Paola Carucci's book (point 1 of the examination programm), I suggest to start consulting the Glossary at the end of the book before beginning to study the text.
Erasmus students are invited to promptly getting touch with the teacher in order to arrange a reading plan for exam preparation.
Assessment methods and Criteria
- Methots: oral exam.
- Type of examination: oral interrogation preceded by 15-20 minutes written test; for admission to the interrogation, the written test has to be passed.
- Evaluation criteria: capacity to demonstrate and elaborate knowledge; capacity for critical reflection on the completed work; quality of exposition; competence in the use of the specialized lexicon, efficacy, clarity.
- Type of evaluation method: mark in 30s.
The format of the exam for students with disabilities should be arranged in advance with the professor, as well as the the relevant office.
