"The objective of the course is to provide a 360° introduction to healthcare management and policy issues that are dominant in the current research agenda.
After the successful completion of the course, candidates are expected to have a deep understanding of the key questions that fill the current research landscape in the healthcare field, as well as to master the available "state-of-the-art" explanations and findings and to envision new arguments for investigations on healthcare management and policy issues.
In particular:
1. The course offers an intensive understanding of topics dominant in the agenda of health sectors, systems and organizations. It tackles managerial dynamics, policy issues and context-based peculiarities that make the healthcare field a unique and formidable laboratory for research. Candidates will have the opportunities to analyze and discuss what we know, what we don't know and what we should know in this field. With a primary emphasis on specificities generated by the public nature of many health systems and organizations;
2. The course will help candidates to familiarize with top journals in the field, through the analysis of their preferences in terms of topics, themes and research methods;
3. Further, candidates will have the opportunity to develop their own ideas on research designs and topics applied to healthcare management and policy issues, combined with the opportunity to map the network of top/emergent academics that do research and work in the healthcare field. Short development essays will also help to keep candidates on track with the course load. The whole course is structured to support the candidates in their quest to develop their own agenda for research in healthcare management and policy. Further, a journal review will provide a first-hand understanding of the cutting-edge themes, salient topics and methodological choices predominantly adopted by scholars.
The course will use formal lectures and class discussions based on readings. "
