Lead instructor: Andrea Pinotti
This seminar explores post-Kantian idealism through the lens of the Socratic paradox of agency and the Moore-Wittgenstein paradox of belief. What generates the paradoxes? What lessons can be learned from them? Can they and should they be "solved"? We will examine the parallel between the two paradoxes and the consequences of that parallel for agency and belief. We will then read some pivotal texts in German Idealism that illustrate the productive potential of the paradoxes for our overall conception of philosophy.
