Lead instructor: Marta Calleri
The purpose of this conference is to analyse material and immaterial forms, verbal and non-verbal languages (words, images, numbers) employed by medieval notaries as mediators between different people, cultures and instances. These themes, which have so far been little exploited by historiography, will allow a better understanding of the important role played by notaries at different levels of mediation: a role that has its premises in Classical and Late Antiquity, but can only be understood in a long-term perspective, reaching its full maturity in Medieval and Early Modern Age.
