Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with a solid grounding in relevant aspects of the history, institutions and culture of the Greek poleis, both in the public and the private sphere. A further aim of the course is to develop the ability to understand and critically analyse epigraphic documents and other sources relevant to the topics studied.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge: detailed knowledge of the fundamental themes and questions concerning the development of Greek institutions, both in the public and the private domain, from the origins to the Hellenistic age, with reference to their historical context and to other disciplines related to classical antiquity. A basic knowledge of the main events in Greek history related to the topics covered in the epigraphic and literary sources, as well as in the reference bibliography presented in class, is also required.
Skills: ability to interpret the epigraphic and literary texts in regard to their characters and nature, and to place them within their institutional and chronological context; awareness of the methodological questions posed by a critical approach to the epigraphic, literary, numismatic, papyrological and arcaheological sources; accuracy in oral presentation and appropriate use of technical terminology. Ability to use the most appropriate bibliographic tools.
