Contact Linguistics
A.Y. 2025/2026
Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the study of innovation phenomena that emerge in multilingual contexts, where the social use of multiple languages gives rise to significant examples of language interference. In particular, the course will provide students with the tools for analysing contact phenomena that affect the various levels of human language (phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon) and the historical and social use of languages. The course will also offer insights into the specific functions of multilingual usage in different communication and media products.
Expected learning outcomes
The topics covered are intended to provide students with adequate knowledge of linguistic and socio-historical dynamics within multilingual communities and contexts, where the use of multiple languages is the norm. Based on this knowledge, students will develop specific skills for the critical analysis of lexical and structural innovations that arise from contact between languages, as well as for the enhancement of plurilingualism to consciously design communication products.
