Learning objectives

The aim of the course is to provide the student of ability to demonstrate and elaborate knowledge: ability for critical reflection on the completed work, quality of expression, competence in the use of specialised lexicon, efficacy and clarity.

Expected learning outcomes

Laboratory is delivered through lectures aimed at providing the student with the essential tools to carry out research in medieval history, with particular reference to the Ancient Hospital of Milan:
-building a bibliography through the available research tools (catalogues and online repertories, dictionaries, databases);
-knowing the main types of medieval sources: reading published records and finding the way through the unpublished;
-public speaking and leading a guided tour.

Title of the course: The Ancient Hospital of Milan. How to lead a guided tour of an historical monument

Applications for admission must be sent to the professor by e-mail (folco.vaglienti@unimi.it) and must contain the indication of the Degree Course, of the academic year of attendance, of the known language/es and its level. The professor will confirm or not the enrollment of the requesting students founded on the number of applications received and assessed the correspondence with the recommended prerequisites.

Prerequisites for admission

The workshop is part of the Transversal Skills project, in the thematic area "Citizenship, culture, legality". It favors the second-third year BA students and MA students (first- or second year) of all degree courses in the Faculty of Humanities. Knowledge of at least one foreign language is recommended (minimum level B2).
The workshop will be held in Italian language. The practical test of the students is held partly in Italian, partly in the better known foreign language.

Teaching methods

Attendance to classes is mandatory. Laboratory is delivered through lectures aimed at providing the student with the essential tools to carry out research in medieval history, with particular reference to the Ancient Hospital of Milan:
- know and understand linguistic complexity and linguistic variations;
- know the object of study according to both a diachronic and synchronic approach;
- select and organize information in a relevant and systematic way;
- critically evaluate texts from different periods and genres;
- consciously use the specific terminology of the discipline;
- present the results of a research in an appropriate and logical way;
- develop awareness of the value of an interdisciplinary approach;
- historically contextualize the monument and create links with the cultural offer of the city during the visit planning period;
- express critical appreciation by arguing one's opinions;
- develop and show empathy towards other ways of feeling and thinking;
- develop self-evaluation skills;
- public speaking, organize and leading a guided tour (individual practical test).
These skills will be first acquired by insights on research tools and sources and then through the guided tour of the Ancient Hospital of Milan and practical experience supported by each individual student in front of the audience of their comrades. Discussion with the teacher during lectures is integrant part of the didactic method and aims at promoting a critical attitude and the ability to apply the acquired competence and knowledge.
The teaching is also based on didactic material provided on MyAriel platform: slides, texts, videos, documents.

Materials (slides, texts, videos, documents) will be specified during the workshop and provided on MyAriel.

International and Erasmus students are invited to promptly get in touch with the lecturer to arrange a reading plan (available in French) for preparation.

Assessment methods and Criteria

Method: the final evaluation will derive from the students' attendance, their active participation in the discussion and the conduct of any assigned practical test.
Evaluation criteria: capacity to demonstrate and elaborate knowledge; capacity for critical reflection on the completed work; quality, linearity and clarity of exposition; competence in the use of specialized lexicon.
Type of evaluation method: the final mark will be an evaluation recorded as approved/Not approved. It is not possible for students to reject the final mark.
The format of the exam for students with disabilities should be arranged in advance with the professor, as well as the relevant office.
