Learning objectives
The aim of the laboratory is to provide an overview of the essential sources for understanding the history of Christianity and the necessary tools (methodological, bibliographic and archivistic). The analysis of the documents will be taught together with the written processing of the results of the research.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the workshop, the students will have acquired the knowledge of the main kinds of sources relating to the history of Latin Christianity and the most important tools of research. They will be able to orient themselves in the documentation related to the history of Christianity, (published and, when possible, unpublished too). They will then be able to use the specialized terminology to express in written form, clearly and effectively, the results of the research conducted under the guidance of the teacher.
These skills will be acquired through a direct and ongoing meeting with the teacher in the classroom. The discussion around the proposed sources will provide critical reflection and methodological learning as well as bibliographic acquisition. Individual work will also be of great importance, with reports assigned by the teacher and then discussed collectively.

Course syllabus
The workshop focuses on the analysis and commentary of a corpus of sources for the history of christianity, concentrating particularly on the period of the Late Middle Ages. Different types of sources will be examined (hagiographic, normative, documentary, judicial, literary), with the analysis of one or more specific examples for every source.
Each source will be introduced and commented starting from the historical-religious and cultural context to which it belongs, paying special attention to dating, author, client, typology, lexicon, and historical dynamics. The reading and analysis will be aimed at guiding the student in questioning the sources correctly, bringing out the main historical-religious problems they pose.
Prerequisites for admission
There are no prerequisites other than those required for admission to the course of study. Knowledge of Latin and Medieval history is not required but will be appreciated
Teaching methods
There will be lectures and analysis led by the teacher (on inquisitorial, canon, literary and oral sources), but also activities carried out independently by the students and then commented in the classroom. Attention will be paid to historiography and bibliography to complete the analysis of the context of the sources.
Teaching Resources
Reference material will be provided during the course.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Ongoing checks of the understanding of the work method and its application are foreseen, with the purpose of drafting brief analysis of sources, which will then be corrected and commented on in the classroom.
Students who regularly attend the laboratory will be awarded 3 CFU.
