Learning objectives
Diagnosis of gastroenterological diseases of surgical interest
indication and contraindication of invasive diagnostic procedures
possible inference of the latter with planned surgical procedures
proper timing of surgery
short and long term complications of surgery
Special attention is paid to oncological surgery of the gastrointestinal tract
Special attention is paid to form links between pathologies, to differential diagnosis, and interpretation of pre and post surgery physiopathology.
Expected learning outcomes
Students must be able to:
GENERAL COMPETENCES
Knowing the generalities of benign and malignant diseases of the digestive apparatus
Knowing the epidemiology of neoplasias of the digestive apparatus (also liver and pancreas)
Knowing the caracteristics of the major neoplastic familial syndromes of the digestive apparatus
Knowing the signs and symptoms of the neoplasias of the digestive apparatus
Knowing the principles of instrumental diagnostics of the digestive apparatus
Knowing the principles and methods of staging of malignant diseases of the digestive apparatus
Knowing the indication to surgery of the malignant diseases of the digestive apparatus, with reference to evaluation of comorbidities and long term complications
SPECIFIC COMPETENCES
Ability to detect signs and symptoms specific of:
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
Achalasia
Diffuse esophageal spasm
Gastrica and duodenal ulcer
Carcinoid
Colon carcinoma
Ability to distinguish characteristics and significance of rectal bleeding
Ability to interpret laboratory findings in evaluation of surgical diseases of the digestive apparatus
Ability to make differential diagnosis of:
Esophageal arcinoma
Peptic ulcer disease
Colon carcinoma
