Learning objectives
- To know pathophysiological aspects and clinical manifestations of hearing and visual apparatus diseases in pediatric age
- To know relevant aspects of locomotor and physical medicine and rehabilitation diseases
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student must know the pathophysiological aspects and clinical manifestations of hearing and visual apparatus diseases in pediatric age and the relevant aspects of locomotor and physical medicine and rehabilitation diseases.
Single course

This course can be attended as a single course.

Course syllabus and organization

Sezione: Bosisio Parini

Prerequisites for admission
Knowledge of the anatomy of the eye and of the visual pathways and of the physiology of the vision process, eye movements and ocular (and head) pain.
Knowledge on anatomy and physiology of the hearing system, oral cavity, larynx, pharynx, nose and sinuses.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam is written and consists of sections of multiple-choice questions referring to the modules of the course.
The module of Audiologia provides for an ongoing test.
The final evaluation expressed in thirtieths.
Malattie dell'apparato visivo
Course syllabus
The correct process of vision: the role of ocular media and their physiopathology: the process of vision, refraction, cornea disorders and cataracts and how they can affect the correct process of vision. Discussion about practical clinical cases.
The red eye: the different inflammatory conditions of the eye, their differential diagnosis, management and treatment. Discussion about clinical cases of anterior uveitis, keratitis, conjunctivitis and acute attack of glaucoma.
Abnormal Eye Movements: the different mechanisms leading to disorders of the eye movements and diplopia. Differential diagnosis criteria and examples of clinical cases.
The visual system in the child: the main steps of the development of the visual system from the eye to the brain. Particular weight will be given to amblyopia, strabismus and to what a pediatrician needs to know about correct development of "the good sight", differential criteria of leucocoria and tumors of the eye and affecting vision.
The blind eye: the more common conditions leading to complete blindness, vascular disorders, e.g. retinal arterial and vein occlusions, diabetic retinopathy, ischemic optic neuropathy, cerebral ischemia involving the visual pathways and neuritis and tumors. The growing importance of the imaging of the eye and specifically of the retina and the optic nerve head compared with the "traditional" examination of eye fundus.
The main chronic eye diseases: diseases relevant from an epidemiological point of view, such as glaucoma, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, which represent the most important causes of legal blindness in Western Countries. Discussion about new therapeutic paradigms that put a strain on the sustainability of National Health Systems
