Occupational Therapy Ii
A.Y. 2024/2025
Learning objectives
The course aims at providing the basics of cognitive, affective, perceptive, motor and socio-cultural development; methods to apply the principles of human development and occupational therapy.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
· describe the development of daily activities in the first years of life;
· explain the importance of "playing" at all stages of life;
· observe, analyze and report occupations of children in nurseries and maternity schools;
· explain theoretical reference models in occupational therapy;
· assess the movement, the joint movement and the strength of the head, neck, trunk and limbs;
· learn craft techniques (clay or painting); designing, planning, creating products individually or in groups; analyze the activity.

Aim: To know how to use the Manual Muscle Assessment (MM Test) to evaluate the strength of the muscles of the upper limb; to know how to use the protractor to evaluate the movement of the upper limb.
Program: Techniques for biomechanical evaluation of the muscles and joints of the upper limb: theory and exercises.
Gait, prostheses and hand grips
- Gait in the healthy person: physiological gait and gait cycle, joint biomechanics, muscle synergies, sign of Trendelenburg, examples of pathological gait, types and choices of orthoses for the lower limb
- Amputations of the lower and upper limbs: etiopathogenesis, realization and types of prosthesis for the upper and lower limb, prosthetic training, rehabilitation and daily activities, discussion of clinical cases
- Low back pain and postures: biomechanics, structure of the spine; low back pain in the healthy worker with particular attention to the safety of the patient during movements; correct postures; use of ergonmiv postures during activities and while seating.
- The hand and the grips: types of handgrips, examples and observation of the grips and of the functional gesture, discussion of cases seen in internships, practical exercises of the use of the protractor and postural observations of persons during manipulation of an object.
Occupational Therapy Practice FRAMEWORK: Domain and Process
- The Occupational Therapy Process
- The forms of doing: task, activity, occupation
- The Model of Human Occupation (MOHO)
- The Canadian Model of Occupational Performance (CMOP-E)
- The PEO Model
- Bottom-up and Top-down approach
- Introduction to Clinical Reasoning
- The meaning of play throughout life
- Theories of relational, sensory, exploratory and exercise play
- The stages of the symbolic play
- Theories about different types of play (video games, gang and team playing, dramatization, strategy playing, creative play, structured play, gambling)
- Your own playful dimension
- Observations of play in all ages and functions in cognitive, perceptive-motor, affective and socio-cultural development
- The observation of children in nursery schools and kindergartens
- Levels of development in activities in childhood
- To draft an observation report
- Theories around creativity and subjectivity in play
