Integrated Stratigraphy: Principles and Laboratory
A.Y. 2024/2025
Learning objectives
The objectives of the integrated stratigraphy course are to provide students with theoretical and practical elements for learning the main techniques and methodologies used in the field of stratigraphy, such as biostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, chemostratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy and elements of paleography.
Expected learning outcomes
The expected results are to provide students with the interpretative keys to understand the stratigraphic record.

Course syllabus
The program of frontal lessons aims to give the student a general knowledge of Integrated Stratigraphy. In particular, the following topics are addressed: general concepts of Stratigraphy; Biostratigraphy; Chemostratigraphy; Cyclostratigraphy; Magnetostratigraphy; Sequence Stratigraphy; Plate-Stratigraphy; Case studies of integrated stratigraphy. Exercises on stratigraphy from well logs and stratigraphic interpretation of seismic lines.
Prerequisites for admission
There are no specific prerequisites required
Teaching methods
The teaching method of the lectures is the classic unidirectional theory-based method of knowledge transfer 'from-teacher-to-student'. Students are however allowed to interrupt the one-way flow of teacher-student information by triggering debates or requests for clarification. The didactic method of the practicals consists in part of the classic unidirectional teacher-student transfer of knowledge and in part of a heuristic-participatory approach with the creation of working groups at the discretion of the teacher.
