Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the tools:
· to learn the pathological basis of the diseases of the various organs and systems.
· to be able to integrate macroscopic, microscopic (histological and cytological) and molecular alterations in the specific clinical context.
· to correctly understand the pathological "report", in its entirety and with its clinical implications.
The course will also describe the main diagnostic procedures in surgical pathology, the professional skills, responsibilities, and areas of activity of the pathologist.

Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student must know:
· The pathological basis of the diseases of the various organs and systems.
· The most important diagnostic approaches of pathology (exfoliative and aspiration cytology, histology, frozen sections) and the techniques (immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology).
· Possible applications of these diagnostic approaches in preventive medicine (cytological and molecular screening) and in the evaluation of prognostic and predictive parameters.
· How to correctly understand and integrate the information provided by the pathology report in the clinic for an adequate therapeutic decision-making process.

Prerequisites for admission
To attend the exam the student must have passed the exam of General Pathology and Physiopathology. To successfully face the course the student must have knowledge provided by previous teachings of Human Anatomy, Histology and Embriology, General Pathology and Physiopathology, Human Physiology and Biology and Genetics.
Teaching methods
Each credit includes hours of frontal and innovative teaching. The innovative teaching activities consist in the deepening of specific topics of the course syllabus, that will be selected by the students and the teacher. Such activity will be carried out in active collaboration between students and teacher.
The course includes 2 CFU of synchronous learning in the III year, 2 CFU of synchronous learning in the IV year 2 and 6 CFU in the V year, of which 5 of synchronous learning and 1 unsynchronous learning.
Unsynchronous learning will be mainly articulated through the methodology of work in small groups and particular attention will be given to the development of clinical-pathological reasoning, the application of a correct diagnostic algorithm, the development of correct differential diagnosis on the basis of emerged evidence, and the correct interpretation of the pathological reports.
The course includes 2 CFU of synchronous learning in the III year, 2 CFU of synchronous learning in the IV year 2 and 6 CFU in the V year, of which 5 of synchronous learning and 1 unsynchronous learning.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of two "in itinere" oral tests, at the end of the III and IV years respectively, and an oral test at the end of the V year.
The student's ability will be valuated to:
a) Clearly and comprehensively define the pathological basis of the different human diseases.
b) Decide appropriately how and when to request a pathological examination in the patient's therapy, care, and follow-up process.
c) Correctly use the diagnostic algorithm of the various pathological investigations available, based on the knowledge of their cost / benefit ratio.
d) Carry out and adequately send the samples taken from the patient to the pathologist.
e) Correctly understand the pathology report.
Passing the test will result in a mark expressed out of thirty.
The student's ability will be valuated to:
