OLD BOOKS AND NEW HISTORIES: A GENDERED APPROACH TO PUBLISHING STUDIES

MODULE A Book History and Archival Turn
The first module presents the storiographic tradition in the history of books, from the 1980s to the present day, with a particular focus on the archival turn and an in-depth study of documentary sources for the history of contemporary publishing.

MODULE B The Other Half of the Moon: Women in the Book Business
Starting with an examination of the different typologies of cultural archives, the second module focuses on the history of women's work in the book professions and on the opportunity to investigate new sources and/or to address new questions to traditional sources.

MODULE C Writing, Publishing and Reading Today: the Great Technological, Social and Cultural Changes
The third module is a seminar and is aimed at deepening into current issues and problems of the publishing system, through a choice of topics to be addressed, where possible, in direct confrontation with the sources and with the direct involvement of the students.
Prerequisites for admission
In the first lessons, basic notions of book history will be taught, as an introduction to the chronology and terminology of the field. However, for those who have never studied Bibliography nor History of printing and publishing, it might be useful to read Lodovica Braida, Stampa e cultura in Europa tra XV e XVI secolo (Roma-Bari, Laterza, 2000 or later editions) and Alberto Cadioli, Giuliano Vigini, Storia dell'editoria in Italia. Dall'Unità a oggi (Milan, Bibliografica, 2018).
Teaching methods
Class attendance is recommended, although not compulsory. The teaching consists of lectures to convey knowledge, skills and language specific to the discipline. Classroom discussion is an essential part of the didactic methodology and aims at fostering a critical spirit and the ability to apply skills and knowledge. In addition to lectures, group work and/or individual reports, participation in conferences and seminars, and visits to archives and libraries are planned.
All course information and teaching materials are published and constantly updated on Ariel.
