Learning objectives
- To acquire the notions for a correct interpretation of the main electrocardiographic pictures
- To acquire diagnostic and therapeutic methods that are used in electrophysiology, in particular on implants and follow-up of permanent cardiac stimulators and automatic defibrillators
Expected learning outcomes
- Knowledge of the most typical cardiac rhythm disorders in both election and emergency
- Acquisition of the methods used for the transmission of electrocardiographic data
- Knowledge of the methods and use of equipment for the diagnosis of cardiac rhythm disorders

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will be written. It will mainly consist of multiple choice questions with the addition of some open questions, in addition it will be possible, at the discretion of the teacher, to carry out an additional oral test.

Course syllabus
The cardiac electrical axis, waves and ECG deflections, interpretation of the normal electrocardiogram
Basic mechanisms of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. General mechanisms.
Supraventricular arrhythmias: pathophysiology and diagnostic framework.
Ventricular arrhythmias: pathophysiology and diagnostic framework
Bases of electrophysiology: the electrophysiological study and transcatheter ablation. Methods and materials used.
Clinical and electrophysiological diagnosis of AV node re-entry arrhythmias, pharmacological and ablative treatment
Clinical and electrophysiological diagnosis of atrial tachycardia and atrial flutter. Pharmacological and ablative treatment.
Atrial fibrillation: classification, pathophysiology and clinic. Diagnosis and ablative treatment.
Clinical and electrophysiological diagnosis of ventricular extrasystoles and ventricular tachycardia. Pharmacological and ablative treatment.
New unconventional 3D mapping systems: electro-anatomical mapping and activation mapping
Bases of cardiac electrostimulation
Principles of operation of the pacemaker and meaning of the programming parameters.
Indications to the pacemaker and implant technique of the stimulator.
Follow-up of the stimulation system. Routine control and main clinical problems.
Principles of operation of the implantable defibrillator and meaning of the programming parameters.
Indications to the implantable defibrillator and implantation technique.
The follow-up of a defibrillator's defibrillator. Routine control and main clinical problems.
Cardiac resynchronization. Indications and implantation technique.
The loop recorder: general principles, indications and implantation technique.
Lead explant. Techniques and materials
Complications of electrophysiological interventional procedures. Clinical and procedural management.
