Earth Physics Laboratory
A.Y. 2024/2025
Learning objectives
The objective of the Laboratory is to provide basic operational knowledge on the acquisition, processing and interpretation of seismic wave recordings produced by earthquakes and environmental noise. The methods for the measurement of earth surface deformations with satellite techniques (SAR), in particular for the construction of the co-seismic deformation surface, are also presented.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the Laboratory the student will acquire the ability to:1) Use the Unix OS basic commands in the command window (shell bash)2) Use applications that process RADAR images with synthetic opening (SAR)3) Acquire, describe and use auxiliary data to the interferometric process (Orbite, DEM)4) Produce and read the products of the differential interferometric chain processing: interferograms and coherence images
5) Read and analyze the intermediate results of an interferometric processing chain
6) Represents the results of the interferometric process with GIS applications
7) Access the databases of the main seismic data centers in order to obtain seismic catalogs, information on seismic networks and to process the raw waveforms.
8) Estimate the magnitude, the origin time and the hypocenter of seismic events.
