Learning objectives
The course, which will take place in the Opera prison and will see the participation of students and inmates, intends to deepen the study of criminology by exploring the encounter perspective from various interconnected points of view: theoretical (the encounter(s) as a criminological issue), methodological (the encounter as a research methodology) and teaching (the encounter as a learning mode). The dialogue between personal experiences, the comparison of collective narratives and the classroom discussion of the results of criminological research enables the co-construction of shared criminological knowledge, which is the result of the encounter between people with different knowledge, experiences and opinions. Teaching based on dialogue, confrontation and discussion is not only a way of learning by 'doing criminology', but also an educational experience on the level of interpersonal relationships in complex institutional settings.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will have acquired:
- an in-depth knowledge of some of the most currently discussed criminological topics;
- an awareness of the importance of dialogue and confrontation in the construction of criminological knowledge;
- skills in managing relationships in complex institutional situations.

Each lesson will be introduced by the teacher followed by working groups and classroom discussions.
Teaching Resources
Considering the specific features of the course there is not a text-book, but specific material will be used for dealing with the criminological arguments.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Learning will be verified through active participation and class discussion. Each student is expected to hand in a written paper. Attendance of at least 70% of the lectures, together with the submission of a paper, involves the attribution of 3 CFU.
