Clinical Risk Management and Its Implication in Legal and Insurance Field

Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the understanding of: (i) the importance of risk management in health care organizations trough a multidisciplinary approach aiming at considering the role of the latent failures particularly in complex organizations such as those devoted to health care delivery; (ii) the main tools available in risk assessment and risk management; (iii) norms, rules and regulations seen as barriers to make health care safer.
Expected learning outcomes
Students: (i) are aware of the change of paradigm in risk management and patient safety; (ii) improve their competence on the use of the basic tools in risk management and risk assessment; (iii) understand the institutional approach to patient safety; (iv) consider how risk analysis can be a useful tool to improve the quality of care.

The exam in a single test is written and includes 30 multiple choice "closed" questions to achieve 30/30 score.
A brief open-ended question will allow those who have correctly answered all "closed" questions to receive cum laude.

Frontal lessons.
The lessons will take place in compliance with the regulatory provisions in force in order to guarantee the best safety conditions to manage the state of evolution of the pandemic.
Students will be able to participate:
- in the classroom, with procedures defined on the basis of the actual provisions;
- possibly, remotely via connection to the Microsoft Teams platform, synchronously via streaming based on the scheduled timetable or asynchronously via registration and teaching material available to students on the ARIEL UniMi platform.
The lessons will take place in compliance with the regulatory provisions in force in order to guarantee the best safety conditions to manage the state of evolution of the pandemic.

The program of the "Legal Medicine" Module of the "Management of clinical, legal and insurance risk" course is structured according to the basic knowledge of the acquisition of discipline necessary to:
- understand the complexity of the "Healthcare System" in relation to risk management processes;
- critically assess the conditions of health care in which it is necessary to examine the implications for professional accountability, patient safety and the quality of care;
- understand the problems of risk management in specific contexts;
- acquire adequate knowledge of the current legislation on informed consent, patient safety, professional accountability and insurance;
- recognize, prevent and manage clinical, legal and insurance risk;
- integrate the knowledge acquired during the course of study in cognitive sciences with practical process of risk management.
