Clinical Orthopedics and Traumatology (qualifying activity)

Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the knowledge to understand the physio-pathological bases, the clinical manifestations, the diagnostic procedures, and the therapeutic strategies (pharmacological, orthopaedic, surgical, and rehabilitative) of the most important pathologies of traumatic, metabolic, degenerative, infective, neoplastic, and congenital origin, involving the musculoskeletal system.
Expected learning outcomes
The students are able to.
i) identify the symptoms, collect the signs, request the diagnostics examinations, and suggest the therapeutic strategies finalized to a correct diagnosis and treatment of the principal musculoskeletal pathologies;
ii) understand and use the specific terminology used in the diagnosis of trauma and in the descriptions of the surgical procedures used in orthopaedics;
iii) evaluate the disability due to these pathologies and suggest a rehabilitative approach.

Qualifying activities include the following ETU:
a) performing the physical examination of the hand/wrist district in a patient with a recent history of trauma
b) performing the physical examination of the shoulder district in a patient with a recent history of trauma
c) performing the physical examination of the foot/ankle district in a patient with a recent history of trauma
d) performing the physical examination of the hip district in a patient with a recent history of trauma
e) knowing how to make an elastic bandage
f) knowing how to make a splint
g) knowing how to make a knee intra-articular puncture
h) knowing how to apply disability rating scales
i) knowing how to mobilize a patient in case of recent arthroplasty surgical intervention

Prerequisites for admission
The student must have the knowledges acquired in the courses of Anathomy of the muscluloskeletal apparatus, Physiology, General pathology, Lab Medicine, Diagnostic imaging
Teaching methods
Course syllabus and attending modality will be presented during an initial meeting for both students and teacher.
ETU learning should be considered as a kind of committment between the student and the tutor: the student will be engaged in acquiring the knowhow defined by ETU, the tutor will ensure the quality and complete training on ETU.
