Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with a general understanding of:
- the emotional experiences and psychological problems faced by patients with chronic and/or genetic diseases and their families
- the role of the psychologist in facilitating adaptation processes to the chronic and/or genetic condition
- the emotional experiences and psychological problems faced by patients with chronic and/or genetic diseases and their families
- the role of the psychologist in facilitating adaptation processes to the chronic and/or genetic condition
Expected learning outcomes
Specifically, at the end of the course students will be able to:
- describe the psychological issues faced by patients with chronic and/or genetic diseases
- illustrate the main developmental tasks of the family in the acute, chronic and terminal phases of illness
- describe the transtheoretical model of change by Prochaksa Di Clemente
- apply some motivational interview techniques in simulated interviews with chronically ill patients
- illustrate the role and function of the psychologist in genetic counseling and in multidisciplinary work with chronic patients
- name the main factors that influence adherence to therapy
- plan patient education interventions
- describe the psychological issues faced by patients with chronic and/or genetic diseases
- illustrate the main developmental tasks of the family in the acute, chronic and terminal phases of illness
