Digital Cultures and Communication Research

Learning objectives
The course focuses on the critical study of digital cultures and communication from a theoretical and methodological perspective. The course is organized in two modules: - 1) Digital cultures: theoretical perspective, that discusses the main concepts and theoretical resources to study digital culture; - Communication Research: methodological approaches, that focuses on the methods used to study digital culture and communication processes. The course is held in English and the exam must be taken in English.
Expected learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course will be able to: a) Critically appraise the relevance of digital cultures and interpret the most salient phenomena within this context; b) Acquire an in-depth understanding of the methodological challenges that characterise researching digital cultures and communication processes; c) Practice and engage with the collection and analysis of digital data, and reflect on the ethical implications concerning these practices.

The course focuses on the critical study of digital cultures and communication from a theoretical and methodological perspective. The course is organized in two modules: 1) digital cultures theory; b) methodological approaches to the study of digital cultures and communication. For attending students, exam materials consist in class content and activities + a reading pack made available by the module convenor on the online portal Ariel. For non-attending students, exam materials include a reading pack made available by the module convenor on the online portal Ariel and the two books indicated in the course materials, to be prepared in full.
Prerequisites for admission
Basic Microsoft Excel proficiency (e.g. Pivot tables).

Attending students: written interim test + mini digital research project + oral exam (all in English).
Non-attending students: oral exam (in English).
