Learning objectives
The aim of this course is to provide students with methodological tools to analyse audiovisual and literary texts from a translation perspective. Students will learn how to examine a text from a linguistic, sociolinguistic, stylistic and rhetorical point of view, taking into consideration the socio-historical-cultural context in which the text was produced and its authorial and linguistic peculiarities. The course also aims at increasing the students' awareness of the different issues a translator should tackle; in fact, a selected choice of texts spoken/written in English will be addressed considering the interdependence between commissioner, translator and model spectator/reader.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be familiar with the main theories that have animated and still animate the international panorama of Translation Studies. Particular attention will be paid to the recent discipline of Audiovisual Translation Studies and to contemporary translation theories - from the 1950s to the present - within the discipline of literary translation. Students will be able to identify the specific characteristics of an audiovisual text and a literary text. Thanks to different translation techniques students will be able to cope with the deforming tendencies, manipulations and rewritings that every text can undergo in translation.

Course syllabus
The course id divided in three modules, each one for 20 hours and 3 cfu.

Module A: Audiovisual Translation
Module B: History of Translation
Module C: Literary Translation Theories

In order to acquire 6 credits, students will follow the program for Modules B and C; students intending to obtain 9 credits will follow the whole program (Modules A, B and C).
Module A will be taught in the first semester, whereas Modules B and C will be taught during the second semester.
Prerequisites for admission
The course is taught entirely in English. The course materials and the bibliography require an excellent competence in English. Some bigliographic references will be in Italian
Teaching methods
Module A employs the following teaching methods: lectures, translation assignments, vision and analysis of source and target texts taken from dialogues of audiovisual products.
Teaching Resources
The course has a website on the Ariel online teaching platform (https://iparinittti.ariel.ctu.unimi.it/), where students can find all the texts and materials provided during the lessons.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The part of exam related to module A consists in the writing a paper/essay of about 1500-2000 words connected to one of the topics studied in class, including a case study. The case study can either focus on the translation of an audiovisual product already on the market, or it can be a proposal of translation for the screen.
