Learning objectives
The course aims at providing the students with the fundamentals of organic chemistry (classes of organic compounds and reactions). Connections of organic compounds to environment and society will be highlighted, especially regarding arts

- Structure and properties of organic molecules
- Polarity
- Alcanes
- Alkyl halogens: nucleophilic substitution reactions. Carbocations
- Alkenes: addition reactions
- Alkines
- Alcohols and ethers
- Aldehydes and ketones
- Carboxylic acids and derivatives
- Aromatic compounds
- Amines
- Carbohydrates
- Aminoacid and proteins
- Nucleic acids

The following topics will be examined in depth:
-Aromatic compounds: name, structure and reactivity
- Heteroaromatic compounds and applications
- "Special"carbon compounds (grafite, diamond, fullerite)
- Light, organic and inorganic dyes.
Prerequisites for admission
It is suggested to have a good knowledge in General and Inorganic Chemistry
Teaching methods
Teaching in classroom including organic chemistry exercises
Teaching Resources
An organic chemistry textbook.
The student can choose one of the following:
- W. H. BROWN Introduction to Organic Chemistry
- J. McMURRY Fondamentals of Organic Chemistry
- L. G. WADE Fondamentals of Organic Chemistry

The students will find the slides used during the course on the Ariel website.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The final exam requires the solving of two consecutive tests. Both tests (12 questions, 75 minutes and 5-6 questions, 30 minutes) consist of both organic chemistry questions and excercises to verify the acquired knowledge The vote is expressed out of /30. The results will be published on the Ariel site of the course.
